View Full Version : Pistol build purpose?

I had a blast building my budget mid-length rifle build and starting toying with the idea of a pistol build.

What is the purpose for a pistol build? just close quarters? Carry in the truck? or is are they more for competition shooting?

Also, what are the different barrel lengths for?

Thanks

D) All the above.

Main purpose, fun to build.

Add a folding stock to a 7.5" pistol and it will fit in a standard backpack.

10.5" pistol fits in a cheap tennis racket bag.

I'm going to put one together just because I still can. You never know what the future is going to bring.

Oh, and mine will be for when the zombies come.

Here is one I'm nearly finished with. Because they are fun to have.

The main reason to build an AR pistol is so you can get what is basically a short barreled rifle without paying a tax stamp and getting one over on ole Uncle Sam ... sbr and sbs shouldn't even be in the NFA (since they were only included early on to close a loophole because pistols were going to be in the NFA, but when they pulled pistols out all the SBs should have been dropped too).

Additionally, you can have a loaded pistol in a vehicle, but there are laws against having a loaded rifle in a vehicle.

Very nice looking pistol there Irving. One of my two new lowers will be used for a pistol. I am planning on going with the "blade" like you've got. Currently planning a 10.5" barrel and a slim keymod handguard.

My barrel is also 10.5". The FastFire and blade make a world of difference in my opinion. I can't wait to get out and shoot it again.

Does one really need to justify why they build any firearm? ;)

I bought my first AR pistol to decide if it was worth it to have an SBR, get a feel for accuracy and handling characteristics of a shorter barrel. Well I'm waiting on paperwork for SBR lower #3 now.

They are alot of fun and easy to wield. If you're worried about ballistics, there's still plenty of "tang" on steel at 300 yds with my 10.5".

If it appeals to you, then do it!

Looks like the 10.5" is the standard. I can build a multi cal lower, put a blade or arm brace on it, and then buy a complete upper to assemble all together right? No special difference between rifle and pistol except the stock?

The pistol receiver has to have been transfered as an other or pistol. If it was a rifle first it's a no no. A pistol can be converted to a rifle and back though.

I meant if I buy a blemished lower from PSA, and build it. A pistol build is the exact as a rifle build, but with a shorter BBL and no stock correct?

It's also worth noting that unless your AR pistol overall length is more than 26"(collapsed) you cannot put a vertical foregrip on it. The Magpul angled foregrip and those like it are legal though.

It's complicated like all atf bs. It cannot readily accept a stock and has to be originally sold not as a rifle.

Assbly wise yes it's just another ar.

On a similar topic, I'm curious if anyone has both a shockwave and SB15, and what what they think of them or prefer....I'm familiar with how the SB15 feels/handles, but have no experience with the shockwave blade....

I had the Sig brace. Found it kind of clunky and heavy. Going to order a Shockwave soon for a 9mm pistol.

Anything less than a 10.5" barrel in .223 will give you a giant fireball because most powders in that cartridge need about 10" to completely burn. As Z said, an AR pistol is basically a legal way to get a short barreled AR without paying a $200 tax.

Flaming Pig helps tame that a bit.

I might throw a blade on mine, still running that 7.5" upper I got from you but barely ever shoot it. :D

glad to hear you still have it! with the new laws in CA, I'm not sure if I can put a blade on a pistol lower, since it isn't a "rifle"

I thought pistol AR's were illegal in CA already?

Some Silencers have a minimum barrel length. If you plan on running one you might want to check what your Silencer requires.

They were one of the few ways to legally have an AR in the state. Not sure if the new laws changed that... they probably did. [facepalm]

Aren't they supposed to be built as one shot or some such nonsense? Because muskets.

Maybe. To be perfectly honest, I don't really care much. [Dunno]

Now, back to the SBR topic. ;)

Bringing this back up since I fondled a 7" pistol and loved it!

I think I would like either a 10.5" with a Noveske pig, or a 7" with a suppressor. This will only be for plinking less than 100 yards, and just the "that's bad ass" factor. So besides length = accuracy, is there any other difference?

Two I'm considering.

I'd go with a 10.5".

As Sand said previously in this thread, most can manufacturers won't warranty anything if it's run on anything less than 10.5".

I built a Righty and a Lefty because one in each hand is not overkill. This is the only pics I have of my "Zombie Exsanguinators" build. They fit nicely in a Double Racquet Case.
