I'm not a hunter or a fisherman so this is kind of surprising to me. I'm going to WA to visit family and they want to go fishing and crabbing, which require a license, and they require our SSN. If you're not and American citizen, foreign visitor, or an Illegal I guess, you aren't required to submit the info since you obviously don't have a SSN. If this is normal and federal law, whatever. I'm always paranoid about giving my SSN out and try not to at all costs. Can someone here more knowledgeable calm my nerves or get me fired up. Thanks.

idk...a lot of states ask for drivers license, which is linked to dmv, which has your social. You'd think the info would have to be requested with a subpoena to be obtained by another agency or individual but that might be wishful thinking on my part lol.

Not sure how to "calm" your nerves but most states, including Colorado, collect your social security number. The reason is that most states adopted laws that deny you a professional or hunting/fishing license if you are behind on your child support.

When I mentioned "calm my nerves", I was looking for someone to say "yeah, SSN is SOP. We all do it". If that's the case, it is what it is you know?

I used to buy licenses for at least, elk, deer, antelope, small game (never hunted small game) fishing with extra rod (never used an extra rod). Bought some of the licenses just to support the DOW.

Then Colorado started requiring your SSN.
I have not been hunting for fishing since.

Like stated earlier, most states such as colorado require your SSN to ensure that you are up to date on any child support, and they can also use it to make sure there or no outstanding warrant for your arrest. For some of you that do not know, in Colorado game and fish officers are every bit of law enforcement as the highway patrol. They can cite you for anything that the CHP can. They will usually call in CHP to deal with traffic violations such as a DUI and traffic accidents as that is not their main priority but they do have the authority.

Well, if your concern was how secure the DPW database might be, I wasn't going to lie to you. [Coffee]

There is a list of allowed uses of your SSN, and a state can require it to make sure you are up on child support payments. However, it is still not legal to require it on a driver's license, for proof of identity or several other reasons. When you voluntarily provide it, you give away some protections and rights.

If you have kids make sure you have their numbers too. I could not get a license for my 12 year old without a SSN, a huge pain.

Request a letter from Social Security Administration stating that your child has not been issued a SSN. It's not all that uncommon for children.

I had a vasectomy 27 years ago, can I give the state a letter that says I can't have any kids eligible for child support? I never give my SSN on any 4473's. Wait until the Demonrats find out you can buy a gun without a SSN but need one to go fishing.
