I shoot a lot out at the Pawnee Grasslands. I have seen a couple of Rattlers already this year. Got me thinking of investing in Snake Gators. Anyone use these or have suggestions (aside from situational awareness) to stay safe with these critters in such abundance?

Lake McConaughy posted a bunch of these pics yesterday of rattlers out in the water.

Screw that.

I wore snake gators while doing some work in Louisiana several years ago. They are hot and uncomfortable but I was glad I had them because of the numerous Cottonmouths. I was never struck but came close several times.

I use these in .45ACP.. fully functions in semi-auto (M&P) Only drawback is you have to be pretty close- the spread is very wide (which is also an advantage)

But if you're far enough away you have that much warning, then a shotgun is probably a better choice.

A decent set of boots that come up past your ankles as high as possible will prevent the vast majority of rattlesnake strikes from drawing blood. Usually, they just want to get away, not bite something they can't eat. Except right after they molt, then they are downright irritable.

I have a blowgun I want to go get some snakes with if anyone wants to point me in the right direction! I have only seen 1 in Colorado and I hunt a lot... I guess I'm just really lucky.. A couple stalks I did on my belly out east hunting pronghorn had me nervous but never ran into one.. Wasn't until I stepped over a prarie dog hole that I got a big wake up call

When we used to go to Big Mac frequently we were told by locals to stay towards the northern side of the lake. The south side has the bluffs and sand hills that favor the snakes.

Whoa - no shit?

Whoa - no shit?

Yeah, my wife saw similar pictures yesterday when she was looking up info about McCoughney.

That's a dick move, even for a snake.

I did a Hog Shoot/Hunt in SE Georgia a couple weeks ago and was told to bring Snake Boots or Gators. I went with the Gators since I couldn't find Snake Boots locally and the cost was close to $200.00.
Selection was limited and I went with these: http://www.sportsmanswarehouse.com/sportsmans/Rattlers-Brand-Mens-Snake-Gaiter/productDetail/Gaiters/prod9999002894/cat101638 and wore a pair of Whites Packer Boots. They're pretty loose fitting and didn't seem to be to warm to wear. For shit's and grins I wore them this past weekend (90*+) while wearing shorts and running a string trimmer and they cooler to wear than a pair of BDU's or Jeans.

If your looking for them, you will find them in the Pawnee Grass lands. They like to lay out in the sun, exposed areas like dirt road tracks are hotspots. I do everything I can to avoid them... Had a close call with my buddies dog, big guy was coiled up rattling and ready to strike. And I have seen a couple little guys (it's the little ones that can really get you) laying out on the dirt roads late afternoon. They camouflage very well.

BTW- belly stalks in the grasslands I would be wearing a hockey helmet with a plexiglass face shield....

They have been all over North and South Table.

Usually, they just want to get away, not bite something they can't eat.

By some miracle, I've been around every species of rattlesnake except for Crotalus catalinensis (and we certainly tried to get one of those) without the slightest incident. In decades of having dozens of rattlesnakes, I've yet to be bitten. A 4wt graphite fly rod is more than enough to convince one to crawl the other way. Yep, it boggles the mind...

I think of myself as a pretty manly man....until today when I looked down and was standing on a garter snake. If anyone thought their 8 yr old daughter was squealing, well, no comment.

Ya some of those stalks were even in the grasslands and though sometimes I found their trails I never ran into them.. And belly stalks weren't the smartest but I will get a Colorado Spot and stalk pronghorn with my bow someday dang it!

Killed this one at work the other day. Work is just south of Parker along Hwy. 83. We seem to kill one, some times two a year. Got lots of bull snakes around too, but they get a pass.
