Computer Guru's? Wifi especially...

So, I have this newly installed laptop made by HP. It is running 8.1 with an i7. This fucking piece of shit won't connect to half of the friggen web pages that I try to go to. It keeps telling me "this page can't be displayed" on random pages. It's pissing me off... Also, the internet isn't really the fastest and my mbps speed is 145. It has 750 GB of storage and 16 GB of ram. What the hell could be wrong with this pile of shit?

Oh, and then sometimes it just disconnects my shit randomly and I have to go click on the connect button for it to work again.

How does it behave when plugged in via ethernet (if you're able)?

Is the driver for the wifi card a Microsoft one or from the company? Is it updated?

You can purge the wlan settings but I gotta run right now.

If I were to give you some command line stuff to input, would you be comfortable with running them?

Also -- are you able to upgrade to windows 10, cus 8.1 is teh awful.

The first thing I'd do is update the driver... but of course you'll need to connect to the internet. As CavSct said, you might try a wired connection to get the drivers updated.

Do you have another laptop to test if it's your router? If not, you could try this solution, as it worked for me before:

Could also see if the driver is wireless card manufacturer supplied or Windows. If Man., then try installing the Windows one and vice versa. Could also try rolling back the driver.

I'd like to know what happens when plugged in though. When I went through this on 8.1, before I upgraded to 10, I was able to access the internet through a VM but not on the host. Go figure that one (which makes me think it's a bug in the OS).

Make sure it doesn't have 2 things trying to control the wifi. An old laptop i had years back had a controller from the mfg, and the Mfg of the wifi card. It was doing the same shit... They both were on from the factory...

not sure of your hp model, but we've had a few new ones at work with a disconnected wifi cable inside. It's just close enough to "kinda" work.

Also, check for a bios/flash update. (and drivers etc)

Does it work the same everywhere? Gotta rule out "your" network first. Could be the laptop, could be the wireless access point...

Quick way to help determine the souce is to take it to another place that has wifi, if it continues the same behavior you know it is your laptop, if it works you know it is an issue on your router. That will at least narrow it down for starters. If you are able to use your cell phone as a hotspot you wouldn't even need to go anywhere to test it.

When I went through the same thing, before resolution, the laptop would behave as the OP's but I could connect at other places and other devices could connect at home, which ruled out the router\network solely. Even more weird, I could use the home network when using a VM on the affected host, but not the host itself.

Without over complicating the scenario based on a simple home wifi setup it is a good first step in determining the source of the issue...

I understand and agree. Just saying that access = go on another network can yield a false positive for the source being the home network.
