View Full Version : A thought on military service

I was just watching the news about the "transgender" issue in the military and a thought hit me- isn't it discriminatory for the military to have an "age limit" for service?
I mean they are allowing the "Fruits and Nuts" to serve, why not the 42+ yo folks?
Think of the skill sets the older folks would bring.
Legit question
3–3. Age
Applicant is eligible for enlistment if any of the following apply:
a.
An applicant is eligible for RA enlistment if applicant’s age, when subtracting prior honorable active Service
completed in any military Service, is not more than 42 and the applicant can qualify for regular retirement with 20 or
more years of active Federal Service by age 62.
http://www.apd.army.mil/pdffiles/r601_210.pdf
So 48 year old PS applicant w/ 10 years service is "38" and will complete 10 more years for a total of 20 by 58, which is below 62.
For non-PS, age limit is 42.
The problem for the "stretch the limit" situations of PS would be RE code, as the closer one gets to the mathematically possible limit, the more likely they were previously indef and have an RE code which could prohibit re-enlistment or require a waiver. At the height of the recruiting rush back from ~2004-2009, waivers were being given out like candy on halloween. Not sure what it's like now, but I imagine with the various moves to draw down, it ain't pretty. Page 28 proper of the AR shows RE codes and their disposition meaning. Also, everything in the AR is subject to a memorandum which temporarily nullifies a criteria either for or against the applicant.

I have often thought that IF a guy had no family or obligations and was stuck with some terminal disease but was still in decent physical shape, could perhaps drive a truck in a convoy for the our Army (over in the "sand box"). Could possibly save the life of one of our much younger soldiers. While we are at it, how about some of the Gitmo prisoners be used as crash test dummies for automobile manufacturers.
The new standard is...
If [he/she/it] can meet the standards, then [he/she/it] gets the job
So why not?
How do I apply to be Commandant of the Marine Corps? I've got some good ideas. Really good ideas!

However, white, heterosexual, Christian, males (like the majority of our founders) are an exception to this rule.

I wouldn't even want to think about spending another 3 months on the island at this point in my life....

Guys are joining now to get transgender reassignment surgery from the VA. I think you would have to be desperate to reenlist today. With drafting women now, I really think we are going to war with space aliens. On the other hand, the transgenders will really confuse the space aliens. Might be a good tactic!
Then they'll just get probed.

What's weirder is that 10 minutes after I posted...an AWACS plane buzzed the house. Maybe 700 feet in altitude. Then it did a U-turn over Pueblo Reservoir and headed back north. Flying kind of low for a 707...
They found you.....
It sure seems like there would be a LOT of things older guys could do in the military that don't require youth and peak physical conditioning. I'm 60 and in poor shape, but there's still lots of non-combat jobs in the military that I could do well. Hell, I can even shoot purty good. Just don't ask me to run.

The age limit changes constantly based on Needs of the Army. I had a 42 year old specialist in Afghanistan. No offense to anyone here but, the older guys who admittedly have a lot of valuable skills and life experience have a very difficult time taking and following orders from leadership who is often younger than they are. Just my observation.

" Just don't ask me to run."
Hey, cut the French some slack, they do the best they can.

Marine?
Nope
Eh. I can still out work guys half my age. Hell, winning money arm wrestling 25 year old gym rats isn't a big deal.
I'd never consider military service but if I did keeping up with the kids these days wouldn't be a big deal.

I saw that plane! I was working in Pueblo and saw it. I also thought it was kind of low for its size.
