View Full Version : Any DISH Installers In Da House?

So, DISH hooked us up the other day but had to resked to move the dish antenna because we couldn't get the 129 sat for HD programming. No big deal. Tech came out today and relocated the dish. This is just an example of the quality of the work when I returned home. I know it's hard to see but the ground wire coming from top to bottom on the right side isn't even stripped. The stripped part of the left side of the wire is just looped around the insulation on the other side. Much of the wire is just handing out in the air. He ran it over the top of my roof and it's laying there loose on the roof. Needless to say, DISH heard from me fairly quickly:

The dish. Notice the ground wire:

Wire tied to the front of the gutter rather than an attempt to hide it to the side or behind:

And no drip loop on the feed...

I'm no installer, and I have outdoor switches so setup differently, but I would have made that connection horizontal with a drip loop beneath.

What a doofus.

I have about 6 mos experience as a DISH installer several years ago. That's exactly how it should've been done. And you always hide the wire when you can.

They should not have used a barrel connector also. The installer was lazy and didn't want to run a new cable so he just extended it. Get them to roll a truck again with a supervisor present.

They're coming out tomorrow morning with the QC manager. The installer was a contractor for DISH. Now they're pissed that I called DISH.

I would laugh in the guys face and tell him if he did his F*ing job right the first time, there would not have been a problem.

I'm glad you posted this, because I wouldn't have even batted an eye at that install. Looks like a lot of other installs I've seen.

No. Should not be typical. If they ever do this to your home, make them fix it. I didn't even post photos of the wire just draped over the peak of the roof.

I've seen that before on roof inspections. Actually, I've seen the power wire from the power pole draped over the peak before.

That's probably to code.

Most times SAT or CATV installers will do some of the most hack ass installs known to man. Fast as possible. Sometimes there are guys with knowledge and a conscience. Not many. Most just don't know any better.

I'm thinking this guy was just sloppy because apparently it took over 4 hours according to my wife. I see about 1.5 to 2 hours work.

When they show up tomorrow, explain to them that you're already three episodes behind on Game of Thrones and you need to watch the season finale asap before you have to punch Jerry-from-work in the throat for spoiling one more scene. They'll understand.

They'll understand.

Yeah, but I won't!

I have had some really good installs, but what you illustrated 'wasn't it'.

I remember having to self-install DirecTV/DSS and Dish, so it's nice being able to have someone else do it, when they do it well.

After I called Dish to complain I got a call from the contractor wanting to know why I complained. I told them. I was told they would like to have an opportunity to correct the issue and they would send someone out the next day if I would cancel the appointment with Dish. I agreed.

A contractor supervisor called the next day and sounded more than a little irritated I wanted him to come by...he was very busy. I told him that was no problem as a Dish supervisor or QC manager was more than willing to come by. The contractor supervisor arrived about a half hour later, still with attitude. Then he looked at the install and his demeanor visibly changed. He ran new cable exactly like I asked him to and admitted it was a very sloppy job. The re-do was much better and I'm happy with the way it turned out.

The only way I'll ever have satellite TV service again is if they allow me to run all the wires myself. I feel bad for the installers because I assume they're paid by the job and there's no way they'd make any money if they could only do 2 installs per day. Nobody wants to mess with crawling through an attic to run coax when it's so much easier (and faster) to just staple it to the outside of the house.

We don't have an attic except over the garage. So that wasn't an option.

DirecTV, wanted to charge me an extra $75 just for going into the crawlspace. (easy access under back porch from in the house - finished out, lighted, no dirt). I had to suggest he drill the hole and poke the wires through, I'll fish them through the crawlspace. Crazy.

You can do exactly that, I own all of my equipment and did the install myself it is easy to do. I have had Dish sense they started. Its funny I had a friend that came to me in the early 80's that asked me to invest in a start up satellite company for just penny's and I just laughed it off. MY BAD [fail]
