I'm not a slave to fashion or the trendiest hairstyles. I've worn the same GI-style haircut I had when my hair grew out long enough to cut after basic training in 1979. Think Martin Milner from Adam-12...the hairstyle.
I hate breaking in new barbers or going to a haircut place like Cost Cutters. "How are we styling your hair today?" We're not styling it. We're cutting it. Short. I seriously don't care, just cut it short. Then, there's the cost. $15 or $20 every 6 weeks adds up over time.
So, yesterday, I took delivery of a Flowbee. That's right. I admit it. Right here on the internet. I bought a Flowbee and it arrived yesterday. Go ahead, laugh, get it outta your system. I'll wait.
Not that the embarrassing part is over and the laughter's subsided lemme say this. It works.
I tried to get Mrs BG to let me give her a little styling touch-up to her coiffure. Surprisingly, she said no. So, I read the instructions (new territory for me...there's some good information in "instructions"), fired up the shop vac and the Flowbee and went to town. And, surprisingly, it worked. Quite well as a matter of fact. Seriously. It gave me a haircut equal in quality to many I've received in shops before. It won't go quite as short as I like it on the sides but it's close enough since I can trim it at will. It gave me a good blended look from the transition areas from shorter to longer hair. It cuts very evenly and easily. It takes a little help to get the back trimmed around the edge and along the neck, but other than that, I'm very pleased. It has several length guides, the hose adapter to attach to a vacuum, the cutter head (the Flowbee), an AC adapter and two oil bottles for the cutter blades. There's no mess. The vacuum sucks the hair right up. I didn't itch afterwards from hair going down my shirt.
All in all, despite the inevitable incoming ridicule, the Flowbee purchase was a good one. If you can stand the teasing, I'd wholeheartedly recommend it.

I'm jealous. My wife won't let me get one. Of course she also won't let me shave my head (which is what I'd rather do).

I don't even axe my wife for permission any more to do stupid shit. We both know she'll say "no" so I save us both the trouble of the initial argument.
Hope it doesn't do this

Prefect timing. This weekend, I sat my daughter (8) in front of a YouTube video showing how to do a men's style cut and walked away. When she was done (she even took notes), she came and cut my hair on the front porch. I just sat there for 30 minutes and let her do her thing without giving her any direction. It was a pretty fun father/daughter exercise. I did go and have the hair cut place clean me up afterward. Ideally I'll have her cut my hair every time until I no longer have to go get it cleaned up.

This thread needs more pictures.
That’s funny, I have had a Flowbee for about 10 years. I use it very infrequently because unless you are cutting short, trying to “style” your own hair is hard to do in the back. I don’t have a buzz cut. My wife refuses to help so I only do it when I have an emergency cut and my regular “stylist” can’t get me in. Then when I do finally get to her she has to cut my hair real short to clean up my handy work. I always think my cut looks good, but evidently, to everyone else it doesn’t look so good. I still refuse to give up my Flowbee and I can’t believe I’m on here admitting I have one. Bailey, stand your ground you will have to fend off ridicule.

Glad the flobee thing worked out. I've considered it a few times. We do have clippers but nobody in the house will attempt to do a cut.

I'm still trying to figure out how to give myself a high & tight to save money, since I like the sides hit with a razor and that gets pricy....No luck so far, and every time I try I end up needing to take off the top as well and hit the whole dome with the razor to keep from looking all messed up.....

Find a good barber.
I had one, but sadly she passed away suddenly. The rest of the crew there pretty much sucked and were a bunch of curmudgeons.

This flobee shit cost too much and a waste of time.
Here's the right way to do it. Forget everything but the #8. Snap it on the trimmer, sit in front of the mirror and go to town.

Flowbee is the bomb, old timer. You need to embrace new technology.
This is like a coming out of the closet "Flowbee" thread. Thanks for the laugh BG. We needed that.
I'm with Kazoo on this one. Except I use a 4 guard, and have the wife clean up the neckline with the microtrimmer. It's probably been 10 years since I had someone other than my wife cut my hair. I'm not dating, I don't have to look like a movie star.
No guard here!! The last time i had someone cut my hair was 10 years ago right before I got married.

I didn't think Flowbee's were still available - I've been wanting to get one for a few years now.
I used to get my hair cut (basic .mil style cut, nothing fancy) on base (USAF), paying $10.75+tip each time. About 2 years ago I bought a Wahl "Deluxe" trimmer for ~$25 and started cutting my own hair, with my wife performing the little clean up/evening out the back. It takes me about twice as long as it did the professional barber, but I don't have to sit and wait for the barber to come available first. Neither my wife or I can honestly see any difference in the haircuts I give myself from what the pro used to give me. Of course, when you're mostly bald, it's easy enough to do.
I'll stand with ya BG! I've been using a Flowbee for many years and love it. As long as you have a good vacuum like a Shop Vac, it'll work great. I don't cut real short, so doing the back can be a challenge, but it's the best damn beard trimmer ever!
Paying for haircuts costs a lot, figure out how much you spend on them a year and you'll choke. Makes the price of the Flowbee much easier to handle. The Shop Vac is the biggest cost, but every guy needs one anyway. Scored mine at a neighbor's garage sale for $10 and it had barely been used, wasn't even dirty.

I didn't think Flowbee's were still available - I've been wanting to get one for a few years now.
They are. On Amazon they're about $120. Or, buy directly from Flowbee and they're $79.95 + $15.00 (give or take) for shipping. I figure that's about 6 - 8 months of haircuts.
And seriously...other than a little mishap by the wife trimming the back with trimmers (she says there was no blood and it'll grow back), it looks as good as most barbershop cuts I've had.
I've heard of #1 and #2...what's #3? Not sure I wanna know if it requires showering.

I've never heard of anyone complaining about a haircut not taking long enough. I pay for the job, not by the hour (or half hour), if they can cut my hair in 2.5 seconds, and it's the length I asked for, with a proper fade, I may tip them extra for saving me time. I certainly don't go to the barber or hair stylist for attention...

One of the reasons I stopped patronizing the local barber shop after my barber died.
It's not that the other barbers couldn't do a decent enough job, although never REALLY quite as good as she did, but most of them took FOREVER, espcially the OWNER of the joint, and I could only put up with the shit that came out of their mouths for so long.

It's not that the other barbers couldn't do a decent enough job, although never REALLY quite as good as she did, but most of them took FOREVER, espcially the OWNER of the joint, and I could only put up with the shit that came out of their mouths for so long.
Yup, in and out, and I'm not much of a barber shop talker either.

I always chit chat, it's the polite thing that ordinary people do and it passes the time, but if the person cutting my hair has to stop cutting to talk, I STFU.

I Bic my head three times a week. Going gray, losing 20% of it and not wanting to pay $20 for a haircut pushed me over the edge.
Every 8-12 weeks, costs four minutes worth of electric bill, no gratuity as I do it myself:

If anyone lives in Frederick, Firestone, Erie or Dacono do you self a solid and go see Mr. Todd's barbershop. He shares his business with the scuba shack.
He's the real deal old school barber. Nothing better.
Ahh, wifeys favorite customer. She hates socializing and hates "talkies". This is one of our google reviews (2 stars):
LOL. She's not the most talkative either.
For every one of those we had a person that REALLY appreciated a little non gossipy peace though.
If it weren't four hours away...

Kind of what I was thinking, although I'm not opposed to road trips if I ever had time.

Try Lucas at Northglenn Barber Shop 120th and Washington I've been going to him for a few years now.
Went there this afternoon (not sure who cut my hair, forgot to ask, will ask for him specifically next time)....not too bad (haircut looks good), and didn't have to wait, but got the disposable razor treatment instead of the straight razor (always been a little peeve of mine, along with electric razors), and it was still >$20 after tip...
Still wishing I could get the fade even myself, but not a big deal in the grand scheme of things....

This thread almost makes the fact that I'm bald before thirty easier to swallow, almost. I use a Norelco tri head electric razor to shave my head three days a week, it's a lot easier than pulling out the razor and the results look the same.

I remember getting a haircut there several years ago! Seems I had Mexican food for lunch nearby too. And IIRC you had a nice old Springfield '03 I had the lust for, but someone had already laid claim to it.
Ah, the good old days, when I worked all over the freakin' state.....

I go to The Clip Joint in Aurora. Best damn barber in the state. A Marine owns it. Fox news on the big screen, pool table, walk in humidor and cigar lounge. And ........free draft beer.

Damn, if this place was up here I'd toss out the clippers and go there!

I lost more money in less time at supercuts than a slot machine in vegas. So, yep, if I'm going to pay 15$+ I'd like to get something for my money.
I was out the same amount of time - waiting in a virtual line of other customers or a scheduled appointment for decent service. I'm not going for the purpose of having someone to talk to, typically that doesn't happen much at roosters. Cut, hot towel, shampoo, neck shave, etc. Makes it more enjoyable. (for me anyways) Good looking staff, free drink. +1
Roosters has military and public service discounts too, everyone should consider.
I need to look reasonable for work, after retiring, I'll probably just start using the wahl.

You got exactly what you paid for, and if you didn't ( I.e. Didn't like the cut) you should have said something and gotten a refund. You pay more at Roosters because you receive extra "attention", but to say you lost money at supercuts is ridiculous. You paid the price of a haircut and you got a haircut, end of story.

Oh Fuk no. it's turning out to be the "crossfit" thread of the summer.

What an awesome thread.
I can't decide what made me grin wider- the vigorous defense of Flowbees, or the fact that people are grumbling that $20 is too much to pay for a haircut! :)

^^ I can fit you in this afternoon if you'd like to be sporting a different hairstyle. Just $20...
It's just a matter of time until I wear my wife down enough that she agrees to let me Flowbee her hair. I'm relentless.

Didn't the Flobee start as a dog grooming tool? I hear you have plenty of dogs...

I don't know if it started that way but I know people say they use them for that. My dogs are all short haired. Having said that, my oldest Terrier, Lola, gave me a long and serious, "I don't know WTF you're gonna do with that but keep it away from me" look. Dogs are pretty smart.
I was a dog groomer, once upon a time, during the same time that my hubby was enlisted. I would give him a buzz cut when it was needed, no sweat (I used Laube clippers) at all. He didn't pay for a haircut for ten years.
Now he has a barber he prefers to go to, and I use my clippers on my friend's shaggy spaniel instead. :)
HBAR, you're not a pig because you like ladies with long hair, any more than I am for preferring men with short hair.
My wife starting cutting my hair shortly after we were married and my son has never been to a barber. Every 3wks the clippers come out with a #1 for what's on top of my and #3 for what's on my face, the boy gets a #3 on top. We're on the second set of Oster clippers @100.00 <> ea in 22yrs it's a huge savings and convenient.

I'd stay and banter some more, but I just put "300" in the DVD player. And I'm watching it with the sound off. [Coffee]
Yes, I'm a COB - guilty. If I can mow my own weed patch, why pay someone else to? I could buy store bought ammo too, but much cheaper to roll my own. And why buy cast bullets when I can make better ones myself? Etc.....
