We have several friends in the current evac area- monitoring the situation closely.

Mountain folks be alert! Initial reports indicate a campfire was the cause. How much do you want to bet one of the scumbag "travelers" is to blame? [Mad]

Boulder County members be safe! Prayers sent.

As to the "travelers" [Mad] , they are getting bad. Wife, kids, and I went camping in Rampart Range last month and they were all over the place, one particular group had six cars, all with license plates from out of state. They had trash everywhere, huge pirate flag strung up for the world to see, several hoola hoops on one of cars, God only knows what they were doing. We had to go pretty deep into the forest to get away from the trash.

The fire is along Ridge Rd. Looks like it may have jumped west of Hwy 72, north of town. Winds are out of the west, so it's moving toward Boulder. So far, it is still north of Boulder Canyon. My house is about two miles away but upwind.

We just got power back. Been out for most of the day. Here say is it was cut because of the fire. Sounds like Hoser's crew may be manning the tankers.

The fire chief was one of the first to lose their house.

The Boulder OEM website (link in my OP) just posted a burn map showing 150 acres on the NE side of Hurricane Hill.

Stay Safe!

Sugarloaf Rd is being shut down due to rubberneckers. [Mad]

The fire is heading down the Summer Rd to Boulder Canyon. Sounds like it may jump west across Hwy 72 close to town. It is also NW of Hurricane Hill.

Cold Springs and Hummer are pretty residential. Not sure what the camping situation is up there.

Tankers have shown up in mass.

Damn, I drove through there yesterday from our cabin off the Peak to Peak. Forest fires are scary dangerous and unpredictable. I'll never forget the bombers flying over our place dropping slurry on the Beaver Reservoir fire barely a mile away. Glad I've done the fire mitigation around our place, have taken several hundred trees out but more yet to go....

Conditions are dry up there now, and so many campers are clueless careless. For people and wildlife, it's not a good time for forest fires. Hope they quash that one fast.

While we were in BoCo, there was another fire on BLM land less than a mile from our house. It's a big burn area now.

Can't see flames from town. The smoke plume does look smaller though. Been looking for a "reliable" update but it's slow in coming.

Tom, you know you have a place to stay if you need it. Just give me a ring.

Just got stopped on the way down Wedgwood to go to work. Smoke spotted up here somere, but "probably" just a camp fire according to the firefighters. Yeah, work can wait until the probably becomes a certainty.

Big thanks GG!!!!! I'm good.

There is a big campfire near Mt. Thoraden(sp?). They are getting ready to have a bad evening. Sheriffs and Timberline in route.

A fire ban is in place. Multiple calls of camper fires. Taking people off the front lines to deal with these dick heads... It's time to close the mountains.

I just went to a Twitter feed, for the wildfire, for the first time. What a cluster boink. Useless!

Wife and I were up there at a prescheduled gathering today at a large home in the burn area. We saw dark clouds of smoke and decided to get out while the getting-out was good. Best wishes to those in the area, we left before it got sporty.

How stupid/careless/ass hat do you have to be to still think a big campfire is good to go when a forest fire is burning near by?

I want my mountains back...

I had a company contact me about shooting a photo for an ad last year and they wanted a campfire scene in the forest. I told them that it was out of the question to shoot that in CO in the Summer as the risk was too high. The company was in VA and they simply did not understand why that was such an issue.

We've had a relatively quiet couple of years in terms of fire but one careless vagabond in the woods can really cause a lot of trouble.

No clue for the clueless.

What really sux is that firefighters, who have been in the field all day, are having to go out to these sights.

More looting calls.

This fire, by 3pm, was visible from 25 miles in most any direction. Orange light in Boulder all afternoon and I could dramatically see it from Golden this afternoon darkening the sky.

In other news, the wind must have shifted, it's very smoky in downtown Boulder again after clearing out this afternoon (now 10:30pm).

Me? Not usually because I rarely ever camp, but that's a valid point. I got the impression from this thread that the fire ban was put into place after the fire started, so if they were already camping, I wouldn't expect them to know. I only know what had been posted in here though.

Yes, the fire ban was releases today. The fires the sheriffs dept are chasing are not small campfires.

Everyone is super vigilant today.

As usual, Gordon Gulch is at the center of the cluster faux.

Just got done evacing the ex's house. Helped some of the neighbors pack up. My stuff is still in the garage.

The fire has jumped to the south side of Boulder Canyon in two places, hence the Magnolia Rd evac.

On good authority, I heard it was a transient campfire.

I read they were actually caught at the evac center. I would buy the story that the two guys started and tended the campfire and she didn't.
At least they have two guys in custody. They were also on private property "camping", so that and the fact they went to evac point at the school even though they had broken camp kinda signals that they were probably homeless..... I mean "travelers".

I heard from a reliable source (house cleaner of the property owner) that the campers had permission to be on the property that evening. Don't know if they were homeless or not, but prob a good chance they are the drifter types plaguing our state

OK, please explain the logic of this to me.

A good portion of Sugarloaf is under mandatory evacuation, but Sugarloaf Road is now open to the public. Might as well just hang an "open house" sign on the homes so Paco and friends from Aurora know where to resolve some social and economic inequality.

I have never been a fan of pre-emptive mandatory evacs when security of property is low on the official priority list. I am glad our friend is still posted at his Sugarloaf home- 590A1 in hand.

Interesting that the area is having issues with predominantly white transients, that have initiated this situation to begin with, aren't subject to evacuation, yet your concern is Mexicans traveling from Aurora to loot homes.

I think my opinion on the transients has been made perfectly clear. Yes- they are still a huge threat for looting, but with the road now being open to the public, Paco (or Cletus or Jamal, as you prefer) is now more facilitated to come exploring from an outside region like Aurora (or Boulder or Arvada, as you prefer).

Yes we do!!

The Magnolia Rd evac was lifted this morning. Almost had to go through a body cavity search to get into that are last night. Was escorted to MY house by a Sheriff's Deputy. Deputy waited til we were ready to leave and escorted us out. On the way in we came across three transients walking on the road. Deputy stops for 30 seconds and pulls away. I was in front and waved the deputy up. Asked if he wanted to take care of them and if I should wait.

His response was "no, they are locals".
Out response, in stereo, was "NO, they are not!".

He said they lived on a street just up the road and we again stated that they did not belong there.

We finished our business and started out. The deputy did stop at an intersection on the way out. I'm hoping he went back or called in for back up. The pisser, for us, is that we had to give an accounting of what we needed to pack and a scolding for not getting it the day before. Also had to show Id with our address. These three were in a mandatory ecav area and no one said boo.
