View Full Version : .22 ammo: Is this "the New Normal?"

First off, I just want to make it clear that I despise hip, pop-culture slang like phrases like "The New Normal." [Coffee]
Ahem. So, I stopped by Cabela's to get some camping gear today and of course I wandered through the gun and ammo section. To my surprise, the area with .22lr (which had been a desert since 2012) looked like this:
66247
Pretty impressive, huh? Wasn't that long ago you couldn't find .22lr for love nor money.
But...check out the prices (if you can see them.) Bricks of 500 start at $50 and go up from there. That's $0.10/round! Close to the price of some centerfire ammo.
Cheapest I could find was CCI 50 round boxes at $3.99 or .08/rnd (I don't know if there was a limit but it seems stupid to sell a box of 50 for $4.00 and a brick of 10 boxes for $50. A per-customer limit is the only reason I can think that this kind of math would work.) I was tempted to get some but I thought - meh, for .08/round I can wait, I have plenty.
Just wondering what kind of prices others are seeing for .22lr. I had thought (hoped) that after the "panic of 2012" we'd see prices drop down to pre-panic levels around $.05/rnd but it doesn't look like that's happening. I guess if they're selling it, it must be a good price. The fully stocked shelves tell me that the "panic" must be pretty much over, despite recent events.
I expect we'll see another minor panic as the election nears. Who knows how crazy it will get if (when) Shrillary gets elected. [Mad]
Wally World still sells auto match and other bulk for about 6 cents a round. For 8 cents I hope to find some mini mags.

Gander Mountain has Mini mags limit 5 and 50.00 for free shipping. I think you can get them shipped to store for free, I didn't check as its not an option for me.

Not sure price wise, haven't purchased 22 for years. That's when bricks of 22 mag were $20 CASH at fun shows and 22 was maybe $15 - $18 per 525 fed bulk pack

I would never use Cabela's prices to set the "new normal", they are always expensive.
Just picked up a box of Winchester M-22 at the Walmart in Highlands Ranch yesterday. 1000 rds for just under $51. Best they were selling for at the Tanner today was $75. Someone else at the show was selling Federal 325 rd. Boxes for under $20.
There is a lot of crazy shit going on in the world, including the upcoming elections. IMO anyone who is not currently buying up ammo as they find it at reasonable prices may find themselves in a panic mode down the road.

Anyone who hasn't purchased ammo way before this is SOL. There's some deals on 223, buying in bulk. What i don't understand is.........
Who Buys 2-3 boxes and calls that bulk?

I haven't seen .22LR at the Walmart near me for over a year. A gun shop I was in today had the 300 packs for $40.

This may be one of those times when the gunshow has the better prices. Thing is you have to go on Saturdays. Earlier is better. You wait till Sunday and most of what will be left is $50 to $60 bricks.
Today:
Federal 325 packs for $19-25
Winchester 1000 packs for $75
CCI mini mag 300 packs for $30
Browning 400 packs for $28
Gotta factor in entrance fee, but may be worth it if you are already planning to go or if you plan on buying a few thousand rounds.
Gotta also watch the online sales. Especially when you can get free ship. Palmetto state has Federal 325 packs for $25 and include fee ship if you buy 4. It's not great but seems to better than what you are currently finding.

$28-$30 for a 525 bulk pack is probably the very best you're gonna do these days.
In ammo terms, "bulk" discounts don't really apply until you hit a pallet, otherwise you're just contending with all the other online shoppers.

Just picked up some about a month back, 5 325 round boxes, price shipped to my door was 6.6 cents per round. Thats what I expect to pay for it. It pops up online for that price often enough to keep me stocked up, even with shooting my new s&w 22 victory every range trip.
But yeah, if you are talking about every day in-store price, I'd guess 8-10 cents per round is what you'll be paying.
Was at Walmart Friday and they had CCI high velocity in stock. Don't remember the price but thought it high enough that i didn't get any. The sign that limits quanity was gone and a guy at the counter bought a ton. I think they're catching up to demand. I think bargains are coming soon.

One of you want to PM me with .223/.22 deals? I'm kind of new to buying ammo so I don't really know what is a good price.
Sportsman's Warehouse had 22 in stock today. Thunderbolt was $34 per 500, CCI MiniMag was $9.99 per 50, and Winchester Super-X was $8.99 per 50. They even had Eley match, I don't recall the price though. Where did all thia 22 suddenly appear from? I think it's pretty obvious that the "shortage" is rigged by now.

Hmmm ... I have an offer from CMP to buy a case (5000 rounds) of CCI Mini-Mag for $493 as a replacement for the Aguila Golden Eagle that I've had on order for a couple years. I was going to pass on it but sounds like I should jump on it.
Less than $10 per box of 100 for mini-mags doesn't sound bad. Does that price include shipping?

It's on the shelves because it's being delivered by the distributors. Large uptick in the last 2 weeks on .22 ammo deliveries, all brands and types. If we're getting it, everyone's getting it- because we all use the same distributors.

So, it turns out to be a silver lining that my boating accident happened a while back. Otherwise I would have to find some place to store 125,000 rounds of ammo.
I still don't understand where all the .22LR is going. I don't think it's being shot as I seldom see people shooting it.
We like to do a hundred rounds or so with the kids a couple times a year. It's fun but then we move on. So I haven't had to buy any in like five years and refuse to hoard (I would only hoard what I could someday use).

I shoot .22 pretty regularly. It's cheaper and easier to practice the fundamentals with. Probably 2-300rds a month on average.

As much as you can reasonably afford to buy or load up. As in thousands. Many thousands. It won't be affordable much longer, maybe not even legal someday. God help us, there's a LOT of people in this country that would like nothing more than to make ALL ammuntion only available to law enforcement and military. And the worst one is running for President, and doing disturbingly well.

Same here. I check weekly but haven't seen ANY .22 ammo in the two GJ Walmart stores since Dec. 2012. Have bought a few short bricks at Cabela's but that's it.

+1. Cabela's is always overpriced.
Every now and then I time Walmart right; I just got 3 boxes of 325rd Federal Auto match for $17.42 per box last week. I refuse to pay the 22lr markups at the cost of my 9mm reloads so I wait and get it for the "normal" price when it's available. Dicks has deals every now and then; so does Palmetto.

It's easy to find 22 around town. The question is , what price are you willing to pay. If it's 10c + a round for plinking quality a lot of shops have it. If 5c a round is more like it, check into Walmart when you happen to drive by and have spare time. Last week I popped into Walmart in evergreen to take a leak and decided to check on the 22 inventory. Caught them sticking the shelf. Scored 3 boxes of auto match for a great price. They were also stocking 3 other varieties. I choose the auto match as it was the best bang for the buck and also the most quantity per box being there is a limit of 3. A month ago my wife and I popped into Walmart at flatirons and they had the bus boxes of Remington. 6 went home with us. 5c a round.
