View Full Version : PMAG mag question.

I had been considering asking if anyone has had experiences with the 60 round PMAG rotary magazine but I then remembered those are not allowed in the former gun friendly State of Hickenpooper. Sorry rub salt in the wound. Perhaps some member in a State other than Colorado will comment on the good/bad of these 60 rounders. Those mags would go nicely with the slide fire/bump fire stocks. they are awesome. Much smaller than you would think. Perfect for high round counts in a prone position (where a 30 or 40 might stick you up too far).

read the directions, they don't unload like you might initially think.

I like it. Easy to load.

Tried one in my AR...it would not feed nor would it allow the bolt to close from lock. The mag would not lock into place with the bolt closed.

Will a LULA loader/unloaded work on these??

Still wondering if the Lula loader for an AR15 will definitely fit the Magpul 60 round 5.56/223 magazine.

The Magpul drum doesn't load from the front like other drums?

Not all drums load from the front. This is a top load

Thanks. I didn't know.

Chinese Ak drums are rear load. But Romanian ak drums are top load. Tommy and ppsh41 are front.

Who's on first?

If it will fit inside a standard AR magazine well (which it does), then the LULA will fit over its feed tower.

Many thanks Circuits! That's the info I was looking for.

Isn't the Surefire 60rd'r a bit more compact AND cheaper?

I've never had an opportunity to try one. Are they any good?

I used to have one and sold it before the new laws because mine would jam up at least once every time I used it. I have a video someplace if you're interested I can dig it up.

I'm not sure a lula would even work due to spring pressure....while it loads from the top like a standard mag, the d60 has a lever which is used to relieve spring pressure while loading, and since you need to articulate the lever while loading, the lula might actually make it more of a pain than loading single rounds - e.g tension lever, push down 1 round off strip/lula, etc., may be a non starter, much easier to single load....

Another thing to consider is that Magpul has published that while the d60 takes a while to load, the primary design consideration to offset that is that it's also designed for (in their words) long term storage while full without any degradation of the springs, housings, or other mechanisms....in other words, load it when you have some time on your hands, then keep it loaded indefinately until ready for use.....

Well, my Magpul 60 is enroute and Brownells have a good price on them.
Nice to know that that the 60 rounder will not have degraded springs from remaining loaded for a lengthy period of time. Now looks like a third arm/hand would be needed to use the LULA on the 60 rounder.
I also know now that the LULA for AR mags will NOT fit the Ruger factory mags.

Went to a gun show this morning here in Illinois. Kinda neat to see magazines of any capacity sold and no big deal about it. Saw some new Pro Mag 30 rounders for $10. At least there is SOMETHING good about Illinois.

So how do you like the 60 round mag? Can you give us a report? Is it easy to load/unload? Have you found it reliable?

Take that $10 and buy lottery tickets. You have a better chance of winning than a fully functioning promag, consistently.

Umm, if I am not mistaken, the fore mentioned AK magazines are loaded from the back door...... The front would be where the pointy end faces when loading.....

This.

Good for range toys for failure to function drills and that's about it.

The ProMag 60 is still in the wrapper. Have not had a good opportunity to give it a try. I'll post results when I get it cranked up.

So glad to hear these "run well". Too dang cold to give mine a try now with temps only in the teens here in the "RUST BELT".

They are the same length of a 30 round PMAG. They are smaller than you would think that is for sure.

It is easy to load for a while, but once you start getting up there in rounds its a little bit of a pain. They can be reliable for a fun range day, but I would not suggest in a fire fight. the best advice... ONLY USE .223/556!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I cannot stress this enough. They can come somewhat apart for maintenance/cleaning.

Why would you try loading anything but the ammo the mag was designed for, in the mag?

because people are stupid and thing they can load .300 into the drum. You should see how blown apart the internals get when they get jacked up.

2 40's and a maglink work perfect for 80 rounds..... although it's a little heavy fully loaded.

I've actually seen them run perfectly and consistently with 300BO.....

Is it possible you witnessed operator-error induced failures?
