Here's the article from the Washington Post about Jack Levi Shirley of Arvada:

Thanks for sharing. His story is one that should be told.

Probably would've made an outstanding Marine.

It takes a lot of balls to join the armed forces in a combat position. I can't even imagine joining "alternative" forces to fight for your country. That's my opinion anyway.

If that accounting is accurate, they should make a movie based on his story....

Just curious why there isn't any outrage about his claiming to be a Marine?

Yeah, not a good fact there.

Because stolen valor is just not that important to most people although it seems to be for a few on this forum.

I was wondering the same thing.

Bad reporting on the part of the WP. Neither Jack or his family ever claimed he was a Marine. He wanted to be but was disqualified over his vision.

Nope- much more important to do a story on somebody who can't figure which bathroom to use.

Whether he claimed to be a Marine or not, he put his life on the line against evil. I can respect that.

I didn't even know you could volunteer to fight for Syria, that's sad to hear that he passed trying to protect not just American lives but anyone that refuse to join Isis. RIP hope you are able to find your peace.

He wasn't fighting for Syria-he was a fighting with/for the Kurds with the Kurdish YPG (People's Protection Units). Very different than fighting for Syria-he was in the Kurdistan region of Syria near the border with Turkey.
