View Full Version : FL resizing die scoring neck?

I was about to make a run on some brass tonight when I noticed on the first few that the necks were exhibiting a scoring symptom.

Took apart the die and cleaned it, and looked inside with a flashlight to see if I could find any roughness, but everything looked fine.

The scoring has a very, very slight step leading to the case body, but running perpendicular it's noticeably ridged.

Has anyone seen anything like this before? Is it a problem or just a cosmetic issue?

Yes, clean it better with toothpaste and a good scrub.

Ok. Looking around some more, it seems others have had the same issue at times and it means the die needs to be polished. Guess I know what I'm doing tomorrow after work.

Steel wool wrapped around a brush and a cordless drill are what you need.

And don't forget to use lube, even when you are just neck sizing...

Thanks for the replies. I picked up a .30 cal bore mop and some 0000 steel wool; chucked it on the drill and spent ~7 minutes just polishing at high rpm. The cosmetic aspect is still there, but I can't feel anything when I scrape over it.

Now have a bunch of .308 brass that's ready to be primed :D

I am sure Redding will replace/repair it if you get time to send it back.

My RCBS dies do the same thing. I'm not concerned with it, it polishes out of the brass easy enough when tumbled.
