I was wondering why the AC has hardly turned off all day. The side of my house cleared that up...

Yes it's hot as shit, people are cranky too!
Change your filter and wash out the outdoor unit!
Can't afford central air this year and won't go into cc debt for it (my house has never had it so need all the plumbing and bigger amp panel). Broke down and got a window unit for the master bedroom so at least one room is cool.
It's nice in Divide. Currently a balmy 66°.
Agree, have had 4 people in my life go off on me today, I hit my breaking point and told them all off, tired of everything I've sacrificed for them without asking or expecting anything in return except for the gratitude they'd show a stranger. F'in people piss me off some days. Too damn hot to enjoy being on the bike, shut down my phone for the weekend so I can ignore those jerks. Arrggghhh, I'll blame it on the weather.
I'll just hang in the one semi-cool room of the house and surf the net before dinner.
Wait, can I blame it on the media, politicians, blm and everything else besides people being assholes??!!! :D

I got the central air on and a window swamp cooler.

No AC or anything right now, currently 86 in my house [panic]
I have a couple of fans but they just move the hot air around. Life is pretty damn miserable at my house right now

This thread reminds me of the Twilight Zone episode: The Midnight Sun, where it's so hot, but in reality it was someone freezing to death dreaming.
Kinda ironic. Really do have sun at midnight here and it's gotta be pushing 68 degrees right now.

Not quite that warm here. It's kinda funny. Our house in Bailey, at 8500', got much warmer in the summertime than our house here does even though on average it's much hotter here. Even on low triple digit days the upstairs doesn't get much higher than 80 to 82 and the lower level will be in the low 70s. But, we have AC here...didn't in Bailey. And electricity is relatively cheap here so I run that AC like it's free.
71 on the main floor, cooler than that in the basement. I'll pay the electric bill to not be any crankier than I usually am...and the people in my life like it that way. [Coffee]
It's hotter here, 102 in the Grand Valley now. Was working in the orchard earlier, very hot and dry. Got the swamp coolers on high so it's fairly comfortable inside at 75F. The peach margaritas make it easier to take.
We've never had A/C. Not using A/C makes you tolerate higher heat easier. It's only 84 in the house right now.

Yes, hot. I'm doing outside projects when the clouds move in, then back inside when sunny again.
Extra large swamp cooler, keeping up. Temps around 70 in the house, cooler in basement ~ 67.
Swamp cooler is installed in old basement window, picks up the cooler air in basement and pushed through house up stairs. :)
Kerry thanks you.

I lived in southern AZ as a kid. Didn't mind the heat then. I do now. Ugh.
That sounds like a good system, especially if the cooler is on the north or east side. Ours are on the hot metal roof pushing air down. A few years ago I replaced our standard evaporative coolers with two high efficiency Breezair coolers. They have much thicker 4" solid pads that last 8-10 years and the units are self flushing based on mineral content of the water, so they stay clean. No pad slippage, far less maintenance and very low energy use, a small fraction of AC cost. I figure it'll save me 90 trips up and down the roof over ten years.
Our original Essex coolers were good for a max 12-16 degree differential, so when temps got over 100, the house was 85-89 degrees inside, pretty miserable. My neighbors have AC and spend four times as much on electricity. Every day I'm glad we popped for high efficiency Breezair evaporative coolers.

Yes, one of the smart things I ever did. Move the swamp cooler to a normal location that I can easily maintain. It was 10 feet off the ground for a few years. (window)
I had a HVAC sheetmetal guy make me a duct that is angled from the cooler down into the ground level window. Works great. Pull all of it out and plug it up for winter. A bit of a pain.
I don't like the idea of them on the roof anyways, seems to me it would defeat the purpose. Hot roof, little cooling.
Mine is an old sears model, rotating pads. I bought extra pads a few years back, so I think it's good for a while yet. I oversized it for the house, I can always turn it down.
I have it now plugged into a smartthings zigbee outlet, it comes on and off based on a temperature sensor in the house.
Solar on the house covers all tv's, computers and swamp cooler running. Little energy used on a sunny day.
2 of the 4 swamp coolers down in the shop today it was muggy and hot 86+ most of the day
My hydronic business partner is working on designing a huge green house with radiant cooled floors should be able to keep up on days like today
I had to wear a jacket fishing today in Alaska. Hope I can bring some cool weather with me when I head home tomorrow
If your house has no AC, jump in the shower with your clothes on, put some ice in a bucket, sit your butt in front of the TV and dry fire your firearms at commercials you hate, then clean and functions check them.

Plenty hot for me. The wife says she want to retire to Alaska. We turn on the A/C as soon as the house gets over 80 in May or June it will be on until September maybe October. Our utility bills are always triple in the summer over what they are in the spring or fall and almost double the winter. And I will gladly pay it. Excel keeps trying to get me to have their saver switch installed so they can control my A/C and I tell them every year hell no.

Sitting in SE SD across from Sioux city I owe way. Balmy 102, after it rained. Of course the humidity was 110% …

You want hot ? I spent the week in the intersections of the 58th. Ave. & 1-25 jacking up traffic all week....
Try working on or next to asphalt breathing exhaust fumes all day if you want hot.
Could have sworn that some neck beard pointed a small handgun at me as he drove by, damn near, Drew & fired, except that his hand and object wasin front of his passengers face and wasn't 100% positive it was a firearm in his hand......

I have central air, but it still gets pretty warm upstairs. One day I need to have an attic fan installed, but until then I've considered making/using one of these for my bedroom.

I've seen the same basic idea done as a swamp cooler (no ice, just water). I'm sure not as efficient as ice, but if you don't have access to ice, it might be nice to have.

I made one of those bucket swamp coolers. It's okay. A pipe on the top to direct the air would be better.

My house is the same way. Four levels. The bottom one is cool enough to hang meat and the uppermost level will be nearly 80 degrees on a hot day. An attic fan has been on my "to do" list for a while.

It is so hot the bottom of my tennis shoe just delaminated...
I left Arizona in '84 partially to get away from the opressive heat, stayed here long enough for it to arrive LOL. In '08 I put a new furnace in my house, too stupid (cheap) to add a/c at that time, damn.
Aren't we the same guys that make fun of global warming??!! Hahaha, go easy just kidding.
It was nice camping the last 4 nights. Overnight actually got a little cold, I'd say it got down to the high 30s. Don't even know how it it was down in town.

It was kinda hot in Biloxi. I used to hitch hike to Little Rock and back on weekends. Things have really changed since 1977. This is what Valerie Jarrett has to say about the heat...

It's been stupid hot. Our AC runs 24/7, and the best it can do with these 92+ degree days is about 82-86. We really need to get a new unit installed, but sadly, it's not in a high priority money-wise.
Dammit.

Have you had a pro take a look? Might just need some servicing.

About the part of unit that is outside- If it isn't in the shade put some shade on it. Even an umbrella can make a difference. Misting water on the outside heat exchange coils can help a lot too.
Check the air filter.
As a side note check the cabin air filter on you car too.
Visualize ice cubes or a nice cool waterfall. Hang the picture on your window that you took of the snow out side last winter.
Just some thoughts. Hang in there.

You're really just wasting money at this point. With no A/C, my house stays at about 80, even on the hottest of days. If we are at home and are doing things like cooking or have all the windows open it will get a little hotter. Need to have your system checked, but no point in having it run 24 hours a day since it's not really doing anything for you.

It was 104 degrees with 65% humidity today where I am, I can't wait to get back to Colorado heat.
The AC unit is from 1988. I change out our filter every month, because we have many cats and a metric ton of dust.
I hosed off the outside of the condenser unit last week, but I'l do it again today. We've got a nice screen of chokecherries that offer shade over the unit, but it still gives off a lot of heat.
I called three different service men to come and take a look at both our AC unit and our furnace, and each one of them blew us off. One kept rescheduling and then finally said "find someone else." The others didn't even bother showing up. Bastards.
I do try to keep it off during the day while hubby is at work- we have a lot of fans. But these past few days have had little to no breeze, and it's been scorching, inside and out. I'm very thankful for the trees we have that provide some shade and protection from the elements...but I do wish we could have some of the rain that Minnesota has been getting.
Thank you all for your suggestions!

I can't do heat indoors, if it's over 70 it's too hot inside.

I prefer it in the cooler side, too. After all, you can always put on a sweater or socks.
Autumn can't arrive fast enough.
