Some of us at our department grew them a few years ago for no shave November. Most of us shaved them off, but a few kept them. These guys remind us of our own. Lol

Throwback to the 70's. Two kinds of men had that stache; cops and porn stars and we know which group was compensating. [Coffee]

They may have lights and sirens.....and know what it's like to hit such impressive speeds as 45 MPH in those trucks...

I'll have you know that I had our brand new engine all the way up at 65 yesterday on the highway. It wouldn't go anymore. Lol

Nice. I firmly believe that fire trucks have the ability to change the traffic signal (In the two jurisdictions I have worked for anyway) only because it is so difficult to get the trucks back up to speed if they have to stop and check the intersection like police cars.

I was trained to stop at all red lights and then proceed. I slow down quite a bit for green lights too. Too many people believe traffic laws don't apply to them

Most often heard line from FD: "We're gonna stage until PD makes it safe for us."

I know you're being sarcastic.

For others:
In places that have the traffic cameras wired with the stoplights, many of those can proactively change the signal when they "see" flashing lights.

I believe there are some regular joes around that have tried to take advantage of that by rapidly flashing their high beams at night.

I think that used to work like 30 years ago.

I saw someone doing this a few months ago out here in my little town and I've been doing it ever since on a certain stretch of road where the lights have really long timing for the cross-streets (with very little traffic early in the morning and late at night when I'm headed to-from work). It seems to work most of the time. [Dunno].

It is called 'Opti-Con' and they are still used, with strobe lights.

Does it really? I used to see people doing this when I first got my driver's license around 2000. Haven't seen it in a long time though. I was under the impression that old lights used to be able to be fooled. I never was able to though. If it's a long light during light traffic, I just get out and press the cross walk button.

All I've got to say to all the Police and Firefighters is God Bless you all and Thank you for doing what you do.

I have no problem saying that I said that twice yesterday. I had to have the police on 5 different calls yesterday, two of which we staged until they cleared it for us. I love tormenting our local cops, but I thank them for keeping us safer. They do still call when they need rescuing or when their car catches on fire. I had a lot of fun taking an axe to a cop car a while back when the engine caught fire.

I don't know of any area using that system anymore. I know SMFD as well as the jurisdiction I am in now have a system to change the lights in the trucks, like and IR signal or something like that. The police cars do not. No matter time of day or intersection we gotta clear them the old fashion way.

Oh that's good. I made a joke the other night to FD that they wouldn't go to a fire unless PD gave them a Code 4 first.

Some laughed some did not.

Yeah, we had a good-natured rivalry with FD, too. We'd sit around during slow times on night shift and dream up reasons/ways to wake up FD. And I had two patrol cars catch fire on my during my career.

Once I arrested this knucklehead and I heard him screaming from the backseat of my car but couldn't make out what he was saying, and didn't really care. I thought it was the normal bullshit. It was on a busy street and it was summer so windows were up. Finally, a passing motorist pulled up and said, "Officer, I think your car's on fire." Sure enough it was. That's why the guy was screaming! Lucky for him (and me) not much smoke made it into the interior...alternator seized up and just caught the belt on fire. There's a story about that stop/incident in Westword somewhere.
