So on the CRC schedule is the Athletic Shooting Challenge on October 29th...what the heck is that? Or, has Mark finally gone off the deep end?
Athletic (American) Shooting Challenge (ASC) is unlike other action shooting sports in that it is meant to test the competitor’s fundamental shooting skills, physical endurance and their ability to complete minor tasks during a course of fire. While it may appear that a particular weapon system allowed offers advantage, it is rarely true. The required target presentations and the physical stressors place an emphasis on shooting fundamentals and physical endurance. A competitor with a 6 shot Revolver and a bolt action rifle can compete on a relatively equal footing with a high cap 2011 9mm and a Match grade AR15. Courses of fire can require from 10 to 36 rounds and require the competitor to cover from 100 to 300 yards with mental and physical stressors. 2 to 4 stages will comprise a local, one day match.
All targets will be steel, and must be hit from 3 to 5 times to advance within the stage. There are no walk-throughs, no reset after each competitor, and no penalties. You either finish under par for your score, or receive the maximum time for a DNF.
Two Divisions, Defense (12g SG and Pistol) and Offense (Carbine and Pistol). Pistol must be 9mm or larger and hold a minimum of 5 rounds. 12g SG must hold a minimum of 5 rounds, Carbine must be 9mm or more powerful and hold a minimum of 5 rounds.
Here is the stage 1 stage procedure for pistol and rifle (run 160 yards, shoot 20 rounds) to give you an idea.
PR:From Box A, at the start signal, hit the far gong 5 times with rifle. Table rifle and run to box C. Hit 5 KD plates. Assemble and load pistol magazine then run to Box D resetting plates on the way. Hit far gong 5 times. Run to Box A, then hit the far gong 5 times with rifle. If you do not go 5 for 5 on a target, you must reload and start over on that target.
This is a relatively simple stage, most will be much more demanding. Walls, kettle bells, tunnels and drags will be common physical stressors. Ballistics calculations, simple assembly could be mental stressors. Crossfit meets bullseye with a timer.

Ohhhh this sounds fun, however I work out a lot more than I shoot, if I could afford to shoot more I'd be all about it.

The round counts are fairly low. This first match will likely be in the 50 rounds max range, so the cost will be fairly easy on ammo.

You lost me at "athletic".

Now, if there's a match where you shoot from a recliner while eating Oreos and Cheetos... we'll sign me up.

Ray, I am no longer in "athletic" shape, but I am going to push myself a little and hope I am not last. :)

As long as there are a couple of millennials there you won't come in last. Slow old guys with gumption can beat a few of them.

Match is Saturday, weather looks great.

This Saturday we are having the Athletic Shooting Challenge at Colorado Rifle Club.

Set up at 8am, shooters meeting at 8:45 and shoot at 9am. $10 entry.

So what is ASC?

No stage walks, no reset, shooting fundamentals after physical exertion. Only 5 rounds loaded at a time. Targets will be a single steel gong or 5 plates per engagement. The competitor has up to 200 seconds to complete, runs, drags, crawls, carrys, throws mixed in with shooting a pistol and carbine on the specified target, do not advance until you go 5 for 5. All stages have a maximum time of 200 seconds. Best time wins.

Here is the WSB for stage 1. From Box A, at the start signal, hit the far gong 5 times with rifle. Table rifle and drag tire to box B then run to box C. Hit 5 KD plates. Disassemble, reassemble and load pistol magazine then run to Box D resetting plates on the way. Hit far gong 5 times. Run to Box B and drag tire back to box A, then hit the far gong 5 times with rifle.

I don't care if you bring a revolver or a high cap Open pistol...it won't matter much, but you need a secure holster. The Carbine, again I don't really care what you bring as long as you have no steel ammo, nothing over 3200 fps no PF over 300. You will need to be able to reload 5 rounds at least twice for the carbine and the pistol. You will need to load more if you miss, but they will be loose rounds from a pocket. I shot this stage this week with a bolt gun and a .38 Revolver then my AR and M&P9, the difference was insignificant. But if you don't go 5 for 5, you have to start over. The targets will be fairly decent size. You can have a sling, but don't need it.

There will be a dummy pistol magazine available if your pistol mag is a PITA to disassemble. This is not a gear race, it is physical exertion and shooting fundamentals.

I have three stages designed and we might shoot 2 or 3 depending on how many people show up.

ONLY pistol and carbine this time...No shotgun.

Just a reminder, set up at 8, shoot at 9, $10 entry.

You need a carbine and 2 magazines, no mag carriers or sling needed.

You need a pistol, holster, and 3 magazines. 2 spares can be in belts or pockets.

All magazines can only be loaded with 5 rounds, so plan accordingly.

Minimum round count is 23 rifle and 40 pistol. That is going one for one on all targets. I would bring 75 rifle and 80 pistol.

There is no need for knee or elbow pads, but you might want a pair of gloves and you will want pants with pockets. You will also want water!

Weather will be great

Well, that was fun. Everyone got pushed out of their comfort zone. Will get some feedback and tweak a few things. A few of the guys asked if we could do it again, even monthly, and some wanted to shoot this style of match in the snow. :)

I have two dates for ASC in 2017. February 18 and October 21. We might add another one if people ask for it.
