Fucking Douchnozzle POS.
Totally my fault for being late, but WTF?
It cost me $75 today in FINES for renewing my car registration 3 months late. For a car that sits in the garage half the year. The entire fucking renewal bill for the year was only $82.
Why? I have plenty of excuses. See, it needed an emissions test. A 2003 MY car that has NEVER FAILED emissions. Unlikely I'd ever pick up a roadside pass because the car is barely driven. Why did I not get it tested in time? Because I work so many fucking hours during the week and weekends to pay my bills and the ass raping taxes to support all these special snowflake low life hippie fucking scumbag entitlement blood sucking progressive Hillary voting gun hating irresponsible dope smoking lay about MF'ers (no offense to responsible dope smokers but if you're here, you're lying on your 4473).
The higher registration and late fees were supposed to pay for improved road and bridge "safety" projects. That's the real fucking crime.

I used to write "Bill Ritter's Illegal Taxes" in the subject line of my checks when I renewed at the DMV. Even if I wasn't late.
Here is the get around: sell the vehicle to someone in your family to avoid the late fees. $7.20 new title fee.

Perfect!
But we only have ourselves to blame. Remember a few years ago it was gonna $50, no matter what for vehicle registration? It went to a vote of the people. CDOT complained and whined that they wouldn't have enough money to fix roads. People believed them.

FIFY... if you sell it, they charge sales tax on the price.

I sell vehicle to family members for $1. Taxes on $1 are cheaper than the gift tax.
The road condition situation around here really pisses me off. Daily. You'd think paying $500 to put plates on a motorcycle would mean I could ride the damn thing without having to swerve around so damn much to avoid bending a wheel or getting bucked off the damn thing.

You got off easy. It cost me more than twice that in fines one year that I let my truck registration go 8 months past due (nobody's fault but my own). Never noticed it and never received a renewal notice in the mail. I took my truck in to have the tires balanced and rotated and they told me I had expired plates. Well, being the nice guy that I am, I proceeded to tell them they are blind and need their vision checked because I know my plates are not expired.
I got home and was having some lunch (while thinking how stupid they were), went outside and looked at my plates then went back inside to look at my paperwork and sure as shit, they been past due for 8 months! OOPS!!!
What pissed me off most is that if I intentionally were to do something like that, I wouldn't have made it a week before I'd get pulled over! Cant tell ya how many times cops were behind me during that time and never got stopped! Go figure!

The penalties cap out after a certain point. I find it cheaper to renew about every other year. Someday, maybe I get an expired tags ticket, or maybe I don't. Either way, I've saved money. Ironic, isn't it. CO registration has reached the point that its more of a punishment to pay it than to be ticketed.
What if you get a ticket and car towed?
Also what about late fees?
Here is the get around: sell the vehicle to someone in your family to avoid the late fees. $7.20 new title fee.
The thought crossed my mind.
I went in thinking it was $10/month, $100 max.

The part that gets me is that you can still get a ticket for expired tags. If you're charging me a fee for not being current, then how do you double whammy me on a ticket? Either dont charge the fee and I risk getting a ticket or charge me the fee and don't give out the tickets.

CDOT states they take in just enough money to do upkeep on the existing roads. We have not raised gas taxes in CO in years. More vehicles getting better mileage and paying less gas taxes bla bla bla. But billions of dollars for trains that take more vehicles off the roads that results in less gas taxes.....
Too much $$$ Fed gas taxes going to DC instead of staying in the states where it was generated.
Got three cars due for tags this month.....and two of them are lucky to get out of the garage anymore....think I'm not gonna reg those two until next spring....
Can we suspend reg like you can with insurance on not daily driven vehicles?

I got used to worrying about tags when I would get the postcard for renewal in the mail. When I PCSed out of Colorado to Maryland 20 years ago, I just didn't think about it as I'd sent in my change of address as soon as I got to Maryland and got updated paperwork. Months go by and I noticed one morning on the way to work that a state trooper was following me through town. I wasn't concerned about it since I wasn't speeding and chalked it up to coincidence until the flashing lights came on. It seems the trooper was just waiting (he followed me for about 3 miles!) for me to exit the town and enter a state highway so the fine went from $50 to $300 -- and oh yeah, Colorado charged me for $100 late registration when I contacted them about the plate renewal.

Last time I remember doing it, there was no sales tax on a gift from Father to Daughter (as an example)
Payment.
To be tax exempt at the time of establishing a title, the gift must come from an immediate family member and it must be given without consideration. Assumption of debt would subject the vehicle to sales tax. Additionally, all vehicles are subject to ongoing ownership tax payable annually at registration renewal time.

yeah, right now higher property taxes on most places I'm looking at in TX are less than the combination of CO property tax and income tax combined (TX has no income tax)
the difference will be huge with Amendment 69... the # seems just wrong, because it's more like BOHICA than anything reciprocal
Then buy it back in about 3 months for $20.00.
Then you have to pay for plates all over... so wait 2 years like Foxtrot said... [Coffee]

I'll say this for Ritter. He created quite the politically aware person in my wife...something I was never able to do. She was never much into politics until Ritter came up with all his "fees" that weren't taxes.
I hate that stupid tax. My two trailers that I rarely use cost about $50 bucks a piece every year. My Suburban is a 1994 and has 49K original miles, some years I put 200 miles on it. My truck gets about 1500 miles when it snows, but my car got 56K last year. And don’t get me started on the cost of insurance.
I just took a pic of the unused tags that I never put on.
66499
The tag cost for my 2004 fifth wheel that sees the highway 5 times a year is sickening.
And they double or triple charge for all plates plus the E470 charge. And because my Suburban is a diesel I have the privilege of going to get an F**ing E-test every year, not every two years like the rest of the front range gas cars, but every F**ing year. And they don’t have a public testing station so you have to find a private testing place. I want to know why if you can drive up an onramp to the highway and test your car, why can’t we just drive down a specific stretch of road to get the test done without the cluster f**k testing center full of idiots’ incapable of driving a manual transmission. Oh, great I just found two more unused license plate tags WTF.
Lady at the license plate place said that itz all due to the Ownership tax we are so lucky to pay.....
Yea, pisses me off about my Diesel test requirement too.
Funny thing is the box goes on stock for the test, and not for the rest.
Stupid program.
At least it's a 2004 and there's no DPF or CAT or other BS on it to rob it of decent mileage.
No, I don't roll coal... just a little extra boost/fueling from an Edge and it's otherwise stock.
Yup, 2005 diesel here. New emissions is crap. Another $50 each year...
Lady at the license plate place said that itz all due to the Ownership tax we are so lucky to pay.....
Why is my 2004 RV, that was half the price of when new, twice as much as my 2003 car?
Because democrats?
Because Race Car!

That law passed by the dems and signed by Ritter when they took complete control in 2007 really sucks! ...along with a multitude of other garbage passed by them since then. The late fees are bad, but what really pisses me off is the Road and Bridge fee on each registration, which I think is $45. Since I have multiple cars, it is almost a $500 tax every year; I am one driver...complete BS! If I can prove that I already paid the fee, I shouldn't have to pay it multiple times.
Additionally, locking the collector vehicle plate at '75 instead of the original 25 years or older provision really annoyed the hell out of me. There are a lot of collector vehicles from '75 to present. If they are that worried about abuse, the law could have been modified to read similar to my collector insurance, the plate can only be issued if the owner has a registered daily driver not older then x. The stupidity of the damn enviros and those that pander to their crap is unbelievable.
My 70 Dodge Powerwagon has a red sticker, same as 2017...I think they repeat the colors every 7 or 8 years...

Almost every time I've driven eastbound on I70 this summer that new left lane from Empire through I-da-hoe Springs has been closed, now we all paid for that and there isn't any reason it needs to be closed during the summer. Fukken stupid CDOT traffic mis-manglement.

Yes but the tolls thing is turned off quite often. Everyone should be able to use it when it isn't specified for tolls.

I'm still pissed that these "fees" have nearly tripled the cost of registering my bikes (from about $17 to over $48 per year). 2 of my bikes rarely turn a tire on pavement, being dirt bikes that are plated for the purpose of connecting trails.

I fully agree. It is another part of our infrastructure that is being left short of cash because of wealth transfer programs (ie medicaid) that suck up a HUGE part of our state budget that never get smaller and like a black hole continue to suck up more and more.
As a member of Pheasant's Forever I was reading about all the farmers that were turned down for conservation programs. Looking at the last farm bill passed it is clear why. Out of the budgeted monies 79% went to food stamps. Conservation only accounted for 8% of the budget. Again a wealth transfer program is taking the a HUGE majority of a budget for this program.
The Dems will let these problems get so bad that instead of being called for wasteful spending everyone throws up their hands and says how much to fix the problems. Then it starts all over again because money is wasted, siphoned off and the problems come back.
