View Full Version : Wolf Ammo any good?
So I searched on this and got mixed reviews.
What is the general opinion on Wolf ammo? I'm assuming there has to be a reason it's cheap?
Not that it makes a difference but my rifle is a Colt 6920. My first ammo purchase was Hornady 223 Rem 55gr FMJ-BT, 500 rnds $164.

A good quality AR and good maintenance and you should be fine with Wolf-the only recommendation I've heard and used with success is a break in period with brass to get the gun broken in. It's affordable ammo for general target and plinking, that's why it's popular with the current prices on brass ammo. Good luck. [Beer]

I use wolf only in my Russian firearms, but in a pinch I will put a lil through my other weapons
I'm with Daniel , keep it in stuff that it was made for. Have chronoed more than 1 lot of 7.62x39 that had extreme spreads of over 200fps , so QC concerns me a bit.

I can't begin to tell you how many 10s of thousands of rounds of Wolf I've fired in my ARs...specifically Colts and my Sabre. No issues whatsoever as far as I'm concerned. Bushmaster includes a card with all their new guns with info on ammo they use to test fire guns...Wolf is one they specifically list as not causing any problems or concerns.
I also shoot it in all my 1911 pistols. I have a Kimber Warrior that shoots it like it was match-grade stuff.

I've known lots of people that fire it without any problems. Having said that, I refuse to use Russian or Chinese ammo in any of my guns. I can afford American ammo (when I can find it at Walmart) and I don't see why we should be supporting their firearms industries.
Just a non-sequitur but I never understood the "super patriots" on other message boards that squawked about Walmart carrying Chinese goods or put down people who shot AK-47s or SKSes but then talked about their Norinco M-14 clones and their Wolf ammo ...

I ordered a couple of cases of Wolf 9mm and a case of Wolf .223 to try out a few weeks ago.
The .223 ran alright in an LMT upper I have. In both my Larue and an LWRC upper I had several failures to extract due to over expanded shell casings. These required me to "mortar" the rifle in order to clear the stopage.
I ran most of the 9mm through a glock 19. I also put a few magazines through another glock 19, two G17s, a berreta 92fs, an HK P7, and two S&W M&P's. The ammo ran fine. I shot the vast majority through my primary training pistol (the G19). At the end of the first case I started seeing a huge increase in FTF due to light strikes on the primers.
I took the slide apart and replaced the striker spring. While I had the slide apart I cleaned it up a little. The channel that the striker runs through was filthy. Much dirtier than I have seen it after several thousand rounds of other ammo.
These reasons were enough that I won't run Wolf ammo through my guns. At $.20/round the 9mm is no cheaper than WWB and I've spent enough on AR's to run quality ammo through them. As always YMMV.
I think you should shoot a few box's and see how you like it. If you don't no biggy I will still use it my guns. But its dirty and smells like cat urine and by no means match ammo even Silver Bear Match isn't even close to match grade. But fun for plinking.

I don't know about your observations of global/political conditions, I for one am concerned.
One of my adjustments is to be sure all my "get up and go weapons" will function with whatever ammo is available in their respective calibre. IMHO

CMMG says if you shoot any steel case ammo or Wolf ammo you void your warranty.
CMMG says if you shoot any steel case ammo or Wolf ammo you void your warranty.
Sounds like I won't be buying one of their guns anytime soon. If they can't make it tougher than it has to be I don't want the headache of dealing with it. I want a gun that will shoot steal, aluminum, brass whatever I can afford to feed it.
I think I'd be avoiding CMMG too.
I did just check my Colt warranty though and there's nothing in there about steel or Wolf ammo.
