View Full Version : Believe it or not, I need someone with a drone...

Anyone around Colorado Springs have a drone and are good with flying it? I need to run a ham radio antenna wire across the top of some trees, but need to make a 90 degree turn halfway through. I figure someone with a drone can knock it out real quick for me...
Damn, something I could do with mine, but I'm a bit far north.
Antenna wire cant be light, you're going to need a sizeable multirotor, unless its possible to do with pull string. I have a fairly large quadcopter, that is pretty overpowered and it only has a payload of about 5 or 6 lbs.

It's about 130 feet of maybe #16 wire, with an egg insulator on the end that isn't too big. If not able to be directly carried, I was figuring on using the strongest fishing line I could get and one the line is ran, I'd connect to the end of the antenna and hope it can be pulled all the way through in one shot!
If you cant find anyone, let me know. I can try to make it down on a weekend and give it a shot.
Or make someones kid climb the tree's?
I have line launching rounds for the 37 mm the 90 degree makes it tough though

Shows what I have to do. The green line is the antenna run, the red lines are power lines along the alley. If it wasn't for that, I could have just crossbow'd it, but even if I was to do fishing line, I just don't want anything to touch power and it would have to.

Please video this.
Actually that's a kickass idea...
You planning on just resting the wire in the tree or what?

Yeah, that's all it needs. The weight of the egg on the far end will give it enough tension.
Offer stands, let me know. May do a lift test to get exact numbers this weekend. (Mine is a frankenbuild, so there is no spreadsheet to tell me)

Let me go and weigh it, see what we're dealing with...
A pulley on a long stick could help mitigate some weight as well. Maybe.
Just did a lift test. Put a 10lb barbell on a scale, zeroed it, and tied it to the bird. Scale read -8 before the weight would start floating around on the driveway. I would guess maintainable payload would be in the 7.5lb neighborhood on a full battery. I wouldnt expect more than 7 minutes of usable flight time at that load. (I get the 34 mins of hover at dry weight)

Just weighed the length of wire and the egg at the end, and it's right at 1lb. I'm kind of thinking it might be best to run fishing line, or paracord first, that could be pulled back if necessary. Still working out logistics and where I expect it to end up. I'm still waiting on a few other parts before I can finish planning the run.
