View Full Version : neighborhood crime PSA
Just wanted to share with you guys.
A neighbor told me about an app called NEXTDOOR that you can use to keep tabs on goings on in your neighborhood. I was surprised at the level of crime in mine. I live close to 120th & Holley.
Mostly we suffer from unlocked car and garage break in / thefts, and it appears there's quite a bit, but to my surprise we've also had a couple crotch rockets and two nice trucks stolen out of the neighborhood. I know, crime is everywhere, still the vehicle thefts surprised me. I have no details like if keys were left in the vehicle or not. Still, pretty ballsy. And it seems to me it's only a small next step to go into a house.
I've always been happy with my area, nice and quiet, or so I thought. FWIW, just thought I'd share.

Yea I've been on it for a while. Thornton is having a huge amount of diesel trucks being stolen. I ;ive at 144th and holly and there have been like 5 or 6 vehicles stolen in the last month or so.
With those trucks, I wonder are they chop shopped, sent to mexico or what are they being used for.

Exactly.... between the old guys threatening to go on a rampage if kids didn't stop riding their bike on the sidewalk (thank god this one was committed fairly quickly once the cops and his kids were notified) and the PTO/church lady/soccer mom, loaded on oxy or speed, sending warnings every 5 min that she saw a: fox, coyote, bear, pedophile, landshark roaming the greenbelt.... Nextdoor as proven to be quite entertaining.

The coyote postings are the best.
We actually had a post about coyote postings. It was a lot of fun.
I've been wanting to post in those threads that there are men (and women) among us with a particular set of skills that could solve the coyote problem. If it weren't for the bleeding hearts.
I can hardly stand my Nextdoor feed. Ours is bitching about fireworks and threatening to call the police.

Not signing up for any SM app. Our slice of suburbia is fairly mild. Besides who cares .
Just joined. Does all info go forward? I see lots of red dots and a few green square. Is there a history or archive?

FYI, you know where to steal things when everyone posts up their address and what is free on the curb, we're going to be gone for a few hours, come take it!

Seen Coyote! ~ Missing Cat!
Recent one here; OMG Someone is shooting 44 Magnum in the alley, I found the shell casings!
I replied back; probably just scrap brass that fell of the metal collectors truck.

Oh, and don't create your profile with your full name... use initials or partial of your name.

^^^^this
Thornton, Northglenn and Broomfield have been hit hard. Supposedly 29 trucks in recent just in those three cities.[emoji35]
It started with 2000-2005 Ford Powerstrokes but now they are going for every kind, stock or lifted with rims, ect.

So there is a lot of garbage on Nextdoor (like the lady who reports every living thing that walks through the open field behind her house), but the Nexdoor site for my neighborhood in Colorado Springs recently integrated with the CSPD and now CSPD has an actual representative (Detective?) who works specifically with the nextdoor members to work on neighborhood issues like car break-ins and suspicious persons. We recently had a rash of car break-ins and vehicle thefts and the CSPD rep worked with people in the neighborhood through Nextdoor to collect evidence and build a case. Turns out, it was these guys: http://gazette.com/4-youths-arrested-in-connection-with-vehicle-thefts/article/1583896
This rash of crime in the neighborhood prompted several people to organize an effective watch program (which even included nighttime volunteer patrols for a few days... which directly led to the apprehension of the individuals in the article above) and has greatly raised awareness for crime and safety in the neighborhood. Thankfully, our Nextdoor has a few very good moderators that keep the drama to a minimum and it has been a very effective tool for the area.
Nextdoor drives me crazy. Had a guy within a week of moving in complain about someone who's dog pooped on his yard and the owner cleaned it up. He "didn't need the extra weight on his lawn while the new sod was rooting".
I'm going to have to check this out and see what the neighbors are saying about me.

It wasn't me !!!!
I have it.. i refuse to post on it anymore. The 'mods' there are triggered worse than the mods here..
We had a good 5 week run of people posting 'did you guys just hear gunshots by such and such...'

I have it, pretty low usage for my neighborhood and surrounding neighborhoods.
Apparently we have a Skunk problem...[facepalm]
Our Nextdoor site is pretty great. Sure, there are a lot of posts about coyotes in the area; we also have a lot of children walking to the elementary school and many people with small pets. It's good for discussion about the road construction and street closures, recent break-ins and neighborhood-newsworthy items. Missing children and/or at-risk adults are also posted on the site, and there have been times that they were reunited with families. There are always portions of annoying chitchat, but it is easy to skip them and move on.
I signed up based on the recommendations on this thread and found out about a rash of garage break-ins in my neighborhood. I'd been meaning to replace the lock on the door from my side yard into the garage and this gave me the impetus. I also scored a nice steel storage rack for $25. So far pretty happy based on a few days of use.
