Still gathering details and exact location, but a family friend on (70) acres has a Coyote problem and wants them gone ASAP.

All I know at this point is they're east of Pueblo. (ETA - just north of Avondale)

Not sure this is the right time of year to be out shooting anything that doesn't eat grass, but I'm putting it out there to gauge interest.

Probably best to go muffled. Obviously the land will need to be surveyed for safe shooting.

Reply to thread here and as I find out the details I will PM those interested.

Interested. Have suppressor and NVG. Electronic call. etc.

The main thing will be the whole no less than 500 yards from a dwelling thing.

On pg 8 of the PDF, 9C (https://cpw.state.co.us/Documents/RulesRegs/Brochure/smallgame.pdf), it states:

"It is illegal to take furbearers within 500 yards of a dwelling, building, campground or other structure, or in areas that jeopardize human safety."

I know of no exception provision for this most retarded rule, so if there is anything some "let me make a name for myself!" CPW officer could construe as a "dwelling" or an "area" which would jeopardize human safety... well....

Thanks,

Including those on said private property?

Again, don't yet have all the details, and I clearly don't know the rules.

I know of no provision for private property being an exception. if you know the location, you could bring it up on Google maps w/ satellite view and see if there is anything obviously within 500 yards. If so, I'd contact the CPW folks and explain the situation and ask if there is an exception. If they say that's fine, I'd see about getting that in writing before moving fwd.

If there is nothing within 500 yards of the potential firing positions, then it should be fine. They're usually pretty good about the various caveats, for example being able to use electronic calls for furbearers, hunting them at night, etc. But I've never seen a caveat on dwellings for furbearers if on private property.

I see that rule listed as 9c, under public land night permit info.

I guess a call to the local office is on order if it gets that far.

Ah... doh! I didn't catch the "on public land" part. Good catch!

Might want to check anyway. Never hunted private land so I just had the no 500 yards within dwelling stuck in my head.

I'm down, I have a few cans and a game light if it can be used.

I'd probably travel for that opportunity. Have extra cans and rifles. You provide factory Ammo.

NM. I missed the good standing part.

This might turn out to be the first L-Shaped ambush coyote hunt in Pueblo. lol.

Near Avondale. Still gathering details.

Once I get the address and figure out the property lay, I'll contact CDW to get clarification on any rules.

I have guns and cans, no worries there.

I have 3k rounds of soft tip 5.56 from a certain group buy a few years back that could finally possibly serve a purpose.

Otherwise I'd have to burn up some .308 or 300BO, I don't have any of those fancy small caliber magnums.

Have you covered on 308 AND 6.5 creedmoor, that's one zippy round.

Got a .308, but not threaded for cans yet.

Well, I have the address.

Not looking real good... She's too close to Hwy 50 and other dwellings off property.

It seems relatively flat land and bound by roads (incl hwy 50) and other property owners/buildings on all sides. This could be a problem. Can't shoot towards roads, and without a backstop (hills), it's probably not safe.

I'm going to talk to her and get more info.

Might consider bow hunt, depending

I did discuss that with her as an option if there's anyone that wants. She's says right now she has no cattle, and there's a litter down in a draw and mom is barking at her horses every night. Yotes are getting her chickens so she desperately wants them gone. Said they've been gone for a few years, assumed someone else was keeping them under control, but they're back this year.

She says there's a backstop, but it still seems sketchy. She's going to get some pics, but I think it's going to take boots on the ground to determine feasibility.

There's always the doves. She said they're the ring neck invasive, so no bag limit. Said she probably kills two of them per day just making one trip out.

Depending on things, could look into shotgun as well.

I frankly have no idea what an acceptable backstop and/or distance is for shooting at ground level w/ shotty. Anyone care to chime in on that?

If the neighbors do not complain, and no bullet holes actually show up in siding, the odds of being written up for the 500 yards thing are pretty low. Shooting over the highway is definitely a non starter.

This sure sounds like fun! I don't have anything suppressed, but am a willing trigger man for one of Jim's offers! [Neene3]

As to the tight land conditions, I guess no one can miss...

How about crossbows?

Sorry, I draw the line at the brewster area for "NY'ers" ;)

I would be interested. Have cans for rifles and I also bow hunt as well.

Avondale area should be good for dove hunting anyway, I always see a bunch on my way out to La Junta.

CavSct1983 and I are working through a few scenarios and details via PM and are going to try to huddle on a call tomorrow.

Frankly, the terrain isn't looking good for centerfire rifle unless we put boots on the ground and determine otherwise.

I thought this was a slam dunk based on the first conversation I had with the property owner, but it's turning out to be a bigger challenge than first expected.

We'll keep working the angles...

Lots of dead rabbits around here. I called the County Health Dept. and left a message. I am guessing "tularemia", but it could be plague, myxomatosis, etc. I have buried 15-20 this summer. Yeah, coyotes can get it from eating infected rabbits. If you kill a coyote and touch its dead carcass, you can get infected. Like I have said before this is a massive die off! One is dead in my drive way right now and died in the last 12 hours. Happy Hunting!

P.S. County called and confirmed tularemia epidemic.
