I took Baret's CCW Fundamental class this past weekend in CO Springs. Going into it I was a bit skeptical as he has no LE/ Mil experience but thought I could learn something from him due to his speed from concealment. Class was 400 rounds for a one day and cost $200.
We started off the day focusing on fundamentals. Stupid basic but at the same time, truly enlightening. He had us study our triggers and make mental bookmarks of nuances in the trigger stroke so that when we were ready to move on to draws, we could draw at the trigger's breaking point every time. We moved on to a bilateral trigger isolation drill. He explained the science behind the drill and like magic, everything clicked. Taking away every other element of a shot and isolating the trigger finger showed me how accurate and consistent I could be. Then moved on to a TPC Trigger Stripe drill. Baret showed us how to keep the gun flat and I was able to consistently shoot .25 second shot strings while staying on target. Baret taught his class how to self diagnose shooting errors and what the cause to each missed shot was.
The afternoon was mostly working on the draw. Learning multiple ways to clear the shirt and each step of the draw with two hands. Once comfortable with that, we moved to the 25 yard line. We would draw and fire immediately at the end of our draw stroke. Here's where learning how to draw to the exact trigger breaking point helped. We then moved up to the 5 to 7 yard line and did a last man standing line drill from the holster. If you missed the silhouette or shot last, you were done. We repeated this several times and got the peer pressure and time induced stress. After practicing the two handed draw stroke, we learned and practiced a one handed draw. We ran a flashlight in the support hand while clearing the shirt, drawing, and firing with our primary hand.
I walked away with a a few key changes to my grip, stance, and draw that made me shoot faster and significantly flatter. I would highly recommend this guy. I'm an active LEO and LEO handgun instructor. I've trained with some well known instructors and this was my favorite class. We didn't go into the "cool stuff" or tactics but the fundamental focus was like none I've experienced before. If you want to shoot disgustingly fast and accurate, you can learn from this guy and continue to practice the techniques from this class.
