Looks pretty great, thanks for sharing. You should run them through a match and see how they hold up.

Very cool, good call on the grip work for the Glock lower, kind of cheesy looking factory grip.

You get skills from shooting competitions, not the other way around.

Check the prices and round counts before you assume all that. Usually you can ride to the shoot. Pay around what you would at an indoor range and shoot two boxes of ammo.

I try to shoot one match a month. Takes up about half a day on a Saturday and costs me $15 and just under 100 rounds of ammunition.

Oh, and good job on the pistols.

All this work on guns and mc's. Sounds like you need to switch from mc's to reloading over the winter months.

How did you get the Sig lower anodized after it had been milled into a firearm?

Irving
09-24-2016, 10:27
My only practice is the match. $15- $20 per match, 90-100 rounds per match, once a month, not too bad to get your feet wet. Once you get hooked, then you can decide if you want to spend the time to shoot 1,000 rounds a month.

This. Back in my younger days I had more time and would practice two or three times a week and compete on weekends. Usually went through 200 or 300 rounds a practice session. Friday nights and Sunday nights were usually spent loading ammo.

These days I'm more in line with Irving. The matches pretty much are my practice.

I only shoot handgun competition these days. I can ignore my rifle and shotgun skills and they don't seem to drop off much when I pick them up again. That doesn't seem to be the case for me when it comes to my pistol skills so I try to stay on top of them by shooting as much as my schedule allows. Which seems to be about one Saturday a month. Lol.

I'll never shoot at a master level or compete in national matches but I'm OK with that. I just do it because I enjoy it.

The lower is 7075 aluminum. I have a rail cutter that uses .118 carbide cutters to cut the slide rails. I also have a drilling jig I used to drill the takedown lever, trigger pin and hammer spring hole. Once this was complete I deburred any rough edges from the milling and got the frame bead blasted. Then the bare aluminum frame got a type 2 anodize. I chose type 2 because it doesn't add much thickness compared to a type 3 hardcoat anodize. Then I used a punch to install the fixed front ejector pin and then proceeded to assemble the frame. The fixed front ejector pin has to be installed after the frame gets anodized because the pin is steel not aluminum. Steel can't be anodized but aluminum can.

What SA Friday meant is, who did the anodizing after you did all the cutting and drilling to turn it into a working firearm? Did you do the anodizing?

Then the bare aluminum frame got a type 2 anodize.

This is the part I'm interested in. Once it was cut into a firearm, how was it anodized. Did you anodize it yourself?

As you may already know, with any 80% lowers all the finishing on the lower must be completed by yourself. I reached out to a couple local gunsmiths because I originally wanted to have the frame cerakoted. They all said they couldn't because it was an 80% lower. Luckily home anodizing isn't too complicated. Here's an awesome video that definetly helps.

What kit did you use or did you individually acquire the nitric acid, nickle acetate, etc and home brew it?

Here's a better video explaining the process. The youtuber mosin virus who made this video lists all the products used in the description of the video.
I get the process. I assemble ARs and work on other firearms for a living. I am very familiar with chemistry. I'm asking what process YOU did.

Chill out bra I didn't know you were an ar/chemistry expert lol. I posted that video because that's the process i followed. I Wasn't trying to question your knowledge or give you a lesson on anodizing lol.
I'm not an expert. It's a pretty common misconception that 80% aluminum lowers will survive with spray paint coatings. Anodizing is currently the only way to get a decent finish on it. The problem is one cannot release the home-made lower to someone to do the finish. First hand local info on how you did it is relevant for a lot of people here. You tube can only show so much. See where I'm going?

My bad, I see where you were going. unfortunately I'm no expert either. You more than likely know more about the chemistry of anodizing than I do haha. I'm ok at following steps and without those videos I would have had no idea where to start. mosin virus, the maker of those videos is a very good source who could give anyone much more info on home anodizing aluminum lowers. he has tons of building/gunsmithing videos on his youtube channel and will take the time to reply to any questions left in the comments of his vids. I'm not sure he is a certified gunsmith or not but he makes top notch videos on all kinds of firearms and I've learned a ton watching his videos and tutorials.

The beginning usual helps.

What mixture, process did you incorporate? Not referring us back to a vid. BUT.......Walk us through your process.

Surely you wrote it down?

I believe it's possibly due to lack of more info..

YES there's utube vid, yes that gives info. What it doesn't give is the OP's actual AAR.

What if anything would he/she have done differently regarding the anodizing process.

Any type of media used if bead blasted prior to / How much prep did the OP do ?

Would the OP suggest anything different, based on the comment I had the frame anodized navy blue and it came out a little darker than I expected.

Why did it come out darker? What if anything being done caused that? Did it sit in the solution too long, or not long enough.
The OP did follow the vid, why did it come out darker? Inquiring minds are......... curious.

His write up was "OK" finished items look very nice, and unless internal issues came up clean machining.

Little things like that . Instead of saying Watch the Vid Bra.

The other reason is, as a 80% receiver, he must do the work and cannot farm the work out, to include the anodizing. If someone else did the anodizing of his 80% receiver AFTER he completed the receiver, there is an issue.

I know we've been over this before, but what exactly is the difference between having a finish coat done on a store bought firearm and one you've completed yourself? I thought it all had to do with whether you had a serial number on it or not. If I remember correctly, even getting the serial number engraved can be problematic, and the answer was to have it engraved before finished, or while you wait.

Normally I'd try not to change the subject of the thread, but since the OP took his ball and went home, here is as good a place as any.

an issue???? are you an atf agent? are you implying I broke the law? I have done everything legally. get off your high horse. not sure why you guys are all being assholes about this. and I'm not sure why you guys are complaining that i didn't give enough detail on my post. i just wanted to share my project with you guys without being criticized through the whole thing. I'm not a fucking journalist and i shouldn't have to give detailed write ups. you guys seem to get all weirded out about homemade guns. i deleted everything because i don't appreciate taking the time to upload pictures and show my project for some asshole to say its not a very good write up and doesn't provide enough info. i don't want to be a part of this forum anymore and i can't figure out how to delete my account. i have asked a moderator to remove my account and i have not heard back. if anyone can tell me how to delete my account i would appreciate it.

Please, calm down. I didn't see the original posts, but it sounds like you have some impressively finished projects, and some were justifiably curious about your process, in hopes of duplicating it. If you prefer not to reveal your "trade secrets", you could simply say so. We all have things we'd prefer not to have aired on a public forum.

I don't have any trade secrets haha. I'm relatively new to the gun scene and these builds were just some fun projects I enjoy and recently got into doing. I posted links to very detailed videos of the process and it wasn't good enough for a few members. Then they post about not giving enough info and the videos not being good enough. I guess I was raised a little different but when someone takes the time to upload photos and share a project I would not start trying to question them on the legality of their project and I wouldn't complain of lack of info. I looked into the law before doing these projects and have even spoken to jeffco police to make sure I was in my legal boundaries before I even started. There seems to be some nice people on here but I'm not liking how I've been treated by a few.
