View Full Version : Garage door spring just broke!
Anybody got a recommendation or want to fix it (paid of course)? I'm normally all for doing things myself but I have bad luck with springy things so I don't touch big ones that can rip my arm off.
would love to get it tomorrow if possible as we are having a bday party tomorrow night. I'm home tomorrow am til 9 gone for a few hours and home again around 2
its a newer home 2009 build 2 car garage door.
I use GDO Dynamics - 303-693-6894.
I've replaced mine twice. It's really not that big of a deal if you watch a few videos and pay attention to what you're doing. The old spring shouldn't be under tension anymore since it broke.
Happened to me in early August. Efficiency Garage Door took care of me very well. A busted spring isn't anything to be taken lightly, if you're not comfortable after watching the videos I'd call a pro. It cost me $170, guy had it done in about 30 minutes and with a spring rated for an additional 6k rotations than the one that broke.
Ankmar took care of me in less than 24 hours. Think is was $200. It's one of those projects that was worth it to me to leave to the experts.

We use Ankmar for residential and Vortex for commercial. Both usually complete within 24 hrs.

I like the Original Over Head Door company . The local operation here in C Springs does a lot to support youth groups and they have excellent service. I personally wouldn't mess with the spring -- the old one will be heavy as hell to bring down and coiling up the new one stores a lot of energy -- not a good situation if you don't know what you're doing.
Yeah I'm not messing with it myself. I think Ankmar installed this door I'll call them and see what they say, found a couple other places online as well locally so hopefully somebody can get it done tomorrow
My buddy Trapper owns The Garage Doctor. Excellent guy and does great work. (303) 345-4707

This.
My last adventure was a couple years ago.
I'm considering using them to replace the garage door/motor sometime soon as well.

If it's one of those single-coil springs, get a professional. I'd recommend Overhead Door in the springs.
Old style dual-return springs one down each side you can easily and safely replace on your own, though, just pick up a replacement at Lowes or hardware store.
Got a service scheduled for tomorrow morning. $178 for both torsion springs replaced. I watched a video and it seems very simple to do but finding springs locally in stock was seeming to be a bit of a challenge so I figure for the extra $100 it costs for someone else to do it id rather not mess with it and get the warranty as well.
thanks for your help guys

Yeah a few years ago I thought I could fix one. Spring was under tension and I got up there with a socket driver. Thing broke loose, spun that ratchet out of my hand and the socket hit me square in the sternum. Fell back off the ladder and had a 3/4" round bruise on my chest that hurt like a mofo. Won't mess with those again.
