I swear our well produces the hardest water known to man and we are looking for some solutions besides the old salt based softeners.
Does anybody have experience with the filtration based or "new technology" units on the market?
We would probably try an under sink unit at the beginning just to see how it works.
Thanks!

I am interested as well. I grew up with a salt water softener and have never gotten used to the water out here.

Me 3... I've heard that the flushing of standard systems is very hard on septic systems as well.
I don't know squat about water softeners from an installation point of view, but we just got back from vacation in the midwest, and stayed at three different hotels that used water softeners. The first hotel we stayed at had just had a water softener installed a month prior, and the water was so "soft" that it was like slime. I didn't feel clean the entire time we stayed there.
The second hotel we stayed at had an older system. The problem with the older systems is that they leave a deposit on your skin that itches, and it dries out your hair.
The third hotel had the water softener set at the proper strength/level.
Good luck with whatever you decide to go with! Keep an eye on the setting, is all.

As a recent resident to Arizona, from Buffalo New York, I recently put a water softener and RO water filtration system in my new house. It's a salt system and works well but to me the water feels a bit slick when bathing. The RO aspect is a Godsend since the water here tastes like dirt. I'm kind of particular about my drinking water and this fits the bill nicely. My dad has the other kind of system, that uses potassium???, I think.
