Family 1: I stopped in a convenience store yesterday to refill my coffee cup. I grabbed an impulse packet of those little mini-donuts that were on the counter for .50 cents. As I was leaving a 30-ish looking guy with 3 little boys was approaching the door. The kids were in front so I held the door open for them. The dad told the boys, "That was very nice of him to open the door, huh? What do you say?" The two older boys, maybe 10 and 8, both gave the perfunctory "thank you" and walked inside. But the little guy, almost 4, stopped, pointed at the package of donuts I had in my hand and asked, "May I have one of your donuts, please?"
Very funny and very cute, I thought. How the hell do you say no to that? I figured it was someone telling me I didn't need mini-donuts. Dad was mortified and kept apologizing for his son..."I'm so sorry, he's only 3, he'll be 4 in a month, we're trying very hard to teach him manners", etc. I assured him it was fine and asked if I could share a donut. He said it was OK with him. So I told the little boy I'd give him the donuts if he'd share with his brothers. He said he would. Everyone was happy and I left with a smile on my face...even though I didn't have donuts.
Family 2: I had a stop on my route at an older but well-kept and neat, single-wide, owned by a local church in an outlying logging community whose best days are long since gone. The church maintains this place as a temporary home for families in need and I've been there several times.
When I got there I noticed a lot of trash in the yard, the grass wasn't cut, junky car...typical "I don't give a shit" look about it.
The "needy" lady of the house (turns out she was 22) came out to greet me while I was filling the tank. 3 dirty little kids, youngest was just past toddler stage to about 5 or 6 for the oldest (mom started very young apparently...but never confirmed they were all hers, either) were outside, running around out of control...trying to climb on the truck, crawling under the truck (PTO shaft spinning and all) and just generally being a nuisance. The girl started talking...boyfriend/baby daddy was 25, suffering from some illness that didn't allow him to work, she didn't work, just moved to ID from WA, hate it here because public assistance (she used that term) was hard to get, can't "smoke" like she did in WA, church was letting them live rent free and paying for propane delivery, empty toy boxes trashing up the yard were donations from church members, blah, blah, blah.
Being polite I mentioned I had recently moved to the area as well from CO and loved it. She got very excited..."That's where we're going as soon as we can get gas money! It's easy to get public assistance there and we can smoke without getting arrested."
My first thought was asking her how much she needed for gas. Then I thought, that's they type of person flooding into CO.
You guys are so screwed.

I see you're again advertising for your relocation program.
Site admins should really start charging you for advertising ;)
Yep...we're already being screwed here... I just hope the inflow of this sort of person is tempered after November when other states legalize it as well...
Yup...Colorado is THE spot now. Its trendy, urban traveler friendly, legal weed, craft beer, cool mountains and stuff to go ruin, etc.

I'm looking forward to getting away from the Front Range at least.
My concern is that we have imported enough of these morons that they will actually get Amendment 69 passed, and we will all be saddled with 10% tax on top of everything else. I have met a few people who think it's a good idea because the companies that are employers will be paying 6.667% and the employee will only pay 3.33%. When I explained that this would just drive companies out of CO, they thought I was kidding or lying to them. If this crap passes, I won't be in CO anymore.
Your last statement is true, but more so for the Country as a whole than just CO.

69 will probably force me out of the state as well.
But it's polling horribly (last time I checked). While some believe the lie (free lunch) many understand the employer portion will be pushed back to employees. I believe there are many Libs who say they support something but actually don't want to pay the true costs of that thing. The ACA educated a lot of people the hard way.

I sincerely hope that the polling is correct. You are right, it is polling poorly, but that doesn't necessarily account for the free-loading druggy element that is growing rampantly here.
I don't put much faith in polling anymore since it's too easy for it to be skewed. There is so much disinformation being thrown around by every camp this election cycle, that we'll just have to wait and see where the chips fall, fraud or not.

I've been looking for polls, if anyone sees any I'd like to see the results... (though it's a moot point, I'm GTFO anyway)

Yes, those costs will impact the non-upper-manglement employee, and the prices on goods and services will go up too.
All costs imposed on companies are borne by the consumer. The end.

Here's the one I was referring to...
http://www.denverpost.com/2016/09/07/colorado-voters-favor-minimum-wage-hike-presidential-primary-new-poll/
Despite the unknowns, the opposition to Amendment 69, known as ColoradoCare, is apparent. Only 27 percent would vote yes in a hypothetical contest, compared with 65 percent who would vote no. An additional 8 percent are undecided, the poll showed.
They would have to double support by November to make this concerning.
Insurance rates for 2017 are rumored to be bad (really bad) and more insurers are abandoning the non-marketplace "Marketplace." If these changes are announced/understood by Nov it could change things but then I go back to wondering if folks will see 69 as a continuation of the failure or a solution.
Please have a heart for your old state and in the future, steer them away from Colorado.
Tell them it is all a big trap, that the Feds set up Colorado to attract pot smokers from across the country in order to secretly arrest them and put them on ships to Liberia.
"Montana is where you want to be. They don't advertise it, but the pot is free in Montana..." Then, hope they freeze to death.

I'm not a big fan of cold horrible winters, but I am hoping for one this year. Crossing my fingers some of these recent urban travelers can't hack it and move elsewhere.
Great original post by BG. really puts it all in perspective. I would love to see some other states with better climates legalize recreational MJ. I think a lot of the leeches would move out of here.

I feel sorry for the good hard-working people of California, but I hope pot legalization passes there.

This is true, but I doubt that without some education, skills, or even a modicum of psychological inclination toward work, they wont be in much of a position to "enjoy" much of any of that. If they are nomadic, I reckon they wont stay long. It's easier to spend a lot of time and energy trying to avoid work than setting out on a career track.

If 69 passes we will be screwed. I think some companies are already waiting to see what shakes out in November before they bid on projects and start bringing on new people.

Yup...
UnitedHealthcare and Humana Insurance will no longer offer individual plans next year, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Colorado is ending its preferred-provider organization (PPO) individual plans and Rocky Mountain Health Plans stopped selling individual policies everywhere but Mesa County. Those combined moves will require 92,000 Coloradans to shop for new insurance next year.
Here's the article about it:

Pretty sure I've got round 2 though I might be on the other side of the river
Seems like every night the talking heads are presenting something new for the "homeless community" here in the 'springs. More free beds, more free food, more free help. At the same time people that they interview that are involved in pushing this free stuff keep complaining about how they can't keep up with demand.
Cause and effect seems pretty clear to me...

Kind of in the same line- I agree with Carl- we are so screwed. They're already here. This is a story about my hometown (I intend to move back soon):

Looks like we gotta get a keg and BBQ then. Propane fired BBQs of course. :)
Hopefully a few other states will get on board with legalizing the stink weed. Maybe divert some of the free-loading scumbags of society from flooding our once free state.

In fairness to family 2, you should really warn her that everyone here is a gun nut and there are loads of intolerant right-wingers who can't stand freeloaders. I-25 is a major thoroughfare for criminal gangs and there are a lot of unsympathetic rude obnoxious a-holes who will yell at her to get a job and do something productive to get her dole.

That was a funny, but very telling post.
I was just thinking about how much I miss Colorado today[Sarcasm2]
It was right after I did a FTF gun trade at the front gate of JBER military base in under a minute with nothing more than handshake at the end.
They are legalizing weed here too, the cold isn't gonna chase anyone out of Colorado if they are sticking around here. Plenty of addicts to all sorts of stuff can be found everywhere in these parts.

It was legal there LONG ago... all these states thinking they're trail blazing, but Alaska did it back in the 1975.... full on recreational, too... no transition with medical purpose.... just legal for an oz on the street, 1/4 lb in your house
Technically, other states tried decriminalization back then, too...

Maybe... I have no idea as I don't care, but there sure is a lot voting going on regarding pot.
Seems like it might be legal to own, but no dispensaries here for medical or recreational.
Pretty sure it wouldn't be legal to be selling on the street corner either.
Colorado didn't really seem to suffer too much until the pot shops opened up.

It wasn't the same model back then... they weren't trying to tax it- just you could have it for personal use, and the state supreme court upheld that the right to privacy included smoking Cannibis in your house.
I just find it funny that the media thinks legalization is a new trend... when the only thing that's new is the dispensaries (so they can officially collect tax)
The kind of problems that have occurred here since it was passed I don't remember being a big problem- so maybe it's the dispensaries that are the problem... or the combination of easy public assistance that wasn't available in Alaska back then
I'm still trying to figure out how the state can bank the taxes from dope but the dopers can't bank their money from sales.

The state treasury isn't FDIC insured, as it is not a private bank?
As I understand it, it's the FDIC insurance that private banks don't want to jeopardize by dealing with dopers and their money.

No. Post 9/11 the various money laundering laws were greatly strengthened. Banks can't knowingly accept accounts for illegal businesses. Criminal liability for the banks.

I think I drove past that "Public Assistance Dispensary" just the other day...
ETA: We're getting a lot of new filings up here involving people who just moved here. I always laugh when the public defender says "He is from [CA, NY, IL, FL, ETC] and has strong ties to the community." No he doesn't, he just moved here for the pot and probably won't show up for his next court date.
