Just saw a thing on TV about Denver PD's new training simulator. Looked pretty cool. Rather than a flat screen you are in a room with things going on all around you. They were going through an active shooter school shooting scenario and you really have to keep your head on a swivel.

They are using the trainer to really focus on de-escalating situations.

Think it was on some local show called "the Now" on channel 7.

The last ten years has been amazing with the types of training becoming available. FX or simunitions ranges are pretty much required for most LE, along with numerous evaluated FATS type training on the big screens. This is on top of all of the red man/role playing that agencies and departments have been using for decades.

I cringe a little whenever I hear people who have little to no clue talking about LE needing more training. Training is already there, but who has the time/money to have more officers working overtime or working short handed shifts to get everyone the latest and greatest training?

The sad reality IMO, is that most training is driven by liability.

We had similar sims in the Army. All kinds of scenarios, etc. Was a pain to get laid on for the "range" though, as they were always booked up. But, it provided a good pre-live fire set of training so you could work out calls, etc. w/o wasting live ammo allocation. Also, it was in an air conditioned room. :D
