My son was leaving a wells fargo parking lot when a big GMC work truck with a really nasty hitch backed out of a parking space into him:

67542

67541

I'm guessing it'll need a new bed, tailgate, bumper, tail light, some wiring. Also some damage to the rim on that side, and a pretty deep scuff on the tire, so probably new tire (or would they replace a pair, or all 4 to keep them all the same wear level?)

The other truck took no damage. The guy in the other truck admitted it was his fault, and it looks like his insurance company (progressive) is covering everything. My son's insurance company (USAA) was notified, and said progressive is covering it 100% (including replacement rental vehicle) and didn't see the need to open a claim. He's taking it in today to get some repair estimates.

Better the rear section than the drivers door..

Damn sorry to hear but if my experience is representative of Progressive he should be well taken care of: last winter a car slid into my Tahoe parked in front of my house. The driver was insured by Progressive-they took very good care of me, within just a few hours Progressive contacted me and started the process. Two weeks if I remember right from the date of the accident to getting my truck back all repaired and looking perfect (left rear quarter panel too the brunt of the hit).

My agent with Allstate told me that was typical from what they've seen. Good luck to your son having a quick process.

Glad to hear it might actually work out. At least they stuck around. Someone did that to my '98 Dodge while I was in Albertson's and just drove off. Manager wouldn't even help with surveillance cameras.

Now I just drive around with a crease in my Passenger side 1/2 door and front section of the bed.

If he's not hurt then it's not so bad.

And although the other driver was careless, the hit was minor (you can do a lot of damage with a hitch), and he's taking accountability for it. Compare/contrast with other drivers who would bail and not even leave a note.

That sucks, but Progressive is pretty good claim-wise. Did they offer to have him bring his truck to them?

When my truck was fixed they just replaced the damaged side of the bed. I didn't even think that was possible.

I wouldn't have guessed it was possible either. We'll see what the body shop says. I think he's hoping for a new bed, but as long as it's back to original condition it'll work.

It definitely could have been worse. We're all thankful that no one was hurt, and that it looks like insurance will sort it all out.
