View Full Version : Moving. Anyone know anything about Las Cruces, NM?
Never been terribly active here at ar-15.co, and that I regret. But everyone I've met has been a quality human. Going to miss you.
That said, anyone know anything about Las Cruces, NM? Wife and I have both accepted positions and we'll be gone by year end. More money / better jobs, cheaper real estate, free tuition at NM state schools and overall lower cost of living pushed us there.
Looking for info, shooting related or otherwise.
I traveled to El Paso (very nearby) on a regular basis and was ok with the area. It's wouldn't be my first choice of a place to live but far from last. Certain types of crime are significantly higher, such as car theft however to your point cost of living is much lower. Rain can be amazingly heavy, never go out if the roads are icy as no one knows how to drive on them. Food expense was almost nothing and some of the restaurants are amazing!
If you use any prescriptions or like cuban cigars get them right across the border, just be careful for fake everything.

The friends we know who moved back from there said.. It's a whole different breed of hispanics down there. Meaning .. that close to the border you have folks with a different mentality. Like beware of surroundings even more so..

Crime wise it's mostly burglaries, auto theft, assaults,. the usual crap associated with more densely populated areas.
As with any other semi free state, it's what you make of it.

No offense to anyone there, but, El Paso is a shit hole. I've spent too much time there to ever think it is anything else.
Las Cruces was nice, the little bit I saw. I spent 3 days with a SEVERE case of the flu in the hotel, and then spent 3 days training Army morons how to use the radios we built, that they put in their missiles.
Folks used to live there. Organ mountains look nice, if you like sand blasted stone landscape that has been left out to bake.
Kid had heat stroke when we walked in the desert in December. Close to the ground is much hotter. Dogs said it sucked.
Don't piss off the locals, they are clannish.
Regarding the Hispanic population - I've been told by someone of Mexican descent who lives in the area: "There are Mexicans. And there are MEXICANS." (emphasis theirs).
I heard that the cops in NM not sure what city or county they have the most accurate/ head shots than any other police force... just saying might not want to get in a shootout there, lol.

Public range west of town, multiple ranges, pistol pits, long range, etc. Great weather for motorcycles. About 2 weeks out of the year where you can't ride. Summers can get brutal. NMSU usually hosts great concerts, big names and such. Good hiking in the mts. Oryx hunts over at white sands, great waterfowl, quail and small game hunting. Lots of public land around. Lived there for 4 years in the 90s and a few years last decade too. Would do it again. Didn't feel the crime or immigration problem was any worse than most other places in the SW. Now El Paso on the otherhand, that's the crappiest crap hole that ever crapped. Silver city and the Gila wilderness are just and hour and a half away, great hiking and fishing. Go east an hour or so and you've got cloudcroft and Ruidoso. More hiking and fishing. Horseyracing and gambling. Cruces was number 2 on our list for new mexico when me and the wife were looking to leave denver.

A friend of mine grew up there ... went to high school there. If you have kids, and they go through school there you can expect a high school graduate with an education equivalent to a bachelors at a top tier college. More STEM PhD's per square mile than pretty much any place on earth.
Oops ... nevermind ... that was Los Alamos, not Los Cruces.

Gross... cruces... could be worse. Could be AbQ. NMSU is there so it's somewhat a college town.

Mexicans are soooo scary.
I worked down there for a couple months. I went out to eat every single night, ran in the evenings on their trail systems, worked in a hospital. I never felt unsafe. There is decent food around, but little to no night life or happenings. A few breweries have opened and have decent beer. There is plenty of hiking around (obviously not on the scale of 14ers here) and White Sand park isn't far away.
As others have said, El Paso is a shit hole, but where you would be going if you're flying places.
Mexicans are soooo scary. Right?
worked in a hospitalWhich one? I've got a job lined up at Memorial.

To get to the El Paso airport, you can bypass the city. Forget the name of the road, but you can cut across north of town.

Seems to be a recurring theme around here about anyone that isn't pure white.
And, yes, El Paso has gone to hell.

First, there is no such thing as pure white. Second, this post is soliciting information about living in Las Cruces. Do not turn it into a discussion of race or racism, or whatever bug happens to be bothering you today. Third, if you do not like it around here, please either work hard to make it better or leave.
Consider that your warning.

To be fair, I was the third to point it out, but your house / your rules.

Forget the name, but the one that goes over the mountain? Much nicer drive.

Trans mountain road, you turn off at Canutillo. I remembered it on my drive home. Yes, a very nice drive.
My mom grew up in Las Cruces and we still have family there. Last time I was there I was just a little kid, but she says as long as you don't mind the desert atmosphere and being an hour from the border you should feel at home. She says to visit La Posta in old Messia for some most excellent mexican food. Also you're not far from Hatch, so hope you enjoy good chiles. And of course there's always the good times you can have in Juarez...just don't drive your car.

I don't know much about the city itself but for a couple of good restaurants (which I conveniently don't know the names of either), as I only make it down that way for 3-4 days every couple/few years, but...
White Sands Missile Range hosts the most fun endurance event I've ever participated in. It's called "The Bataan Memorial Death March", and, if you like meeting great people and long walks in the desert it's worth checking out. For a real good time go "heavy".
Silver city has great mountain biking and hunting.
Cloudcroft has the same.
Good rock climbing in the Organ and the sacramento mountains. Specifically "the tunnel".
Great 'yote and rabbit hunting on leased blm land. Look around "tres hermanos" if I remember the name properly. The fishing in tule creek above tularosa is pretty fun.
I'm from alamogordo for reference.

Speaking of Silver City, I have 10 beautiful acres of land for sale between Fort Bayard in the (Arenas valley) and Silver City. Sits high, flat, great homesite with spectacular 360 panoramic views, one can see the heights of Silver City to the west, Kneeling Nun to east, valley to the south, mountains to the north. Cruces is ok. I am from the area.
