What's going on in Castle Rock? Heard at work this morning that there was a heavy police, fire, EOD presence with arrests, bombs detonated in a golf course (Caddyshack?), house condemned... Did someone not get enough candy? Basement dwellers have their x-box taken away?
Im wondering what kind of chemicals they had to get the house condemned... PETN making stuff? Meth on the side?
They found items that were determined to have been dangerous, but in need of further manipulation to have been turned into explosive devices. They discovered this while investigating the property for some unusual chemicals. It was two teenage boys.
That's what I heard on NPR anyway.

Basiclly the same thing was said on Christmas.7 this morning.
What was with EOD having to detonate the items ?

Only speculation, but probably Potasium Perchlorate and Aluminum Powder. Pretty common mixture for making loud noises. Also easy to get.

That's what makes me think PETN or TATP, although that would be pretty high up the food chain for a teenager.
Did they shout "fore" before they blew the items on the golf course? Would there be a penalty stroke assessed for landing in a detonation crater, if one had to move the ball to play?

There was a statement that some of the mixtures were vibration sensitive to the point if someone "handled them roughly" they would have exploded. Kids might have been playing with the Anarchist's Cookbook, kill yourself edition. There was a great recipe for nitro-glycerine which involved a candy thermometer and a gas stove. ...oops boiled it! [Pot]
One of the kids is supposed to be a chemistry wiz. They were picked up for curfew violations and they found this at the home of one of them.

No. We did "fireworks" of various configurations.

Maybe they were just trying to get rid of the golfers. Gophers. Whatever.

What do you mean as a kid? Adults can make it too. Not saying I do, or did.................. Just gotta be caution of any static.

Nah,
Mexico was only 15 miles to the south. And big fireworks were cheap there. So we just canibleized them for components.

An underused/never needed EOD usually equals anything suspicious is getting blasted.
No residual chemicals that I know of from blasting agent/explosive production will cause a house to be condemned. Meth cooking will though.
But... you never heard this from me.
They released a list of charges for them.
Posession of handgun and explosive for one of them. Other one got 2 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor and handgun posession.
I may or may not have had 3ish grams of ammonium triiodide go up spontaneously when I was in high school...[Abused]

WTF?! I thought this was a bomb situation?

Amazing what can be found when one invites the police into their life.

Last I heard the kids have not been charged with anything, just the adults.

Must have been one hell of an "explosive" if the one kid had a bond set to $1,000,000 when the other with the sexual charges had theirs set to $50,000. They both had a handgun charge, only difference was explosive .vs sexual exploitation of a child.

Evacuations lifted after chemicals removed from Castle Rock home

It was nearly a month ago that authorities first found the chemicals in a house in the 400 block of West Prestwick Way.
[snip]
Since then, Castle Rock Fire and Rescue has been monitoring and working with a licensed and approved chemical contractor to safely remove any existing chemicals from the home, officials said.

Just before 11 a.m., calls started going out to the evacuees letting them know they could return home.
WTF-O?
Nearly a month to clear a single home? So dangerous neighbors couldn't move in but it was in the hands of a contractor (not CBI, FBI, etc)?!?
The lawsuits are going to be insane! The family might as well declare bankruptcy.
I think they were let back in and then re-evacuated when they found MORE explosive chemicals.

Tuesday afternoon, a chemist found possibly explosive materials.
Officials evacuated eight homes Wednesday morning while those final chemicals were removed.

Ah, okay. Well that makes a lot more sense then but I still find it nuts that this has drawn out this long.
If I were a neighbor I would be going ballistic.

Damn! A whole month to go through the house. Wish I had some inside info on this one. Sure would be interesting to know what they are finding and why it is taking so long.
