View Full Version : H4895 under 175SMK .308 info
Anyone have any data? I'm running low on Varget and have some H4895 which is easier to find and looking for higher MV if possible.
Anyone with Quickload?
20" Barrel, 10.25 twist
Lapua 2.010
2.865 OAL
SMK 175, length 1.245, G7 .243
Fed 210 primers
Now running 44.9 Varget pushing 2640 at 6000DA / 85 deg.

40 ( ~2480) - 42.7 ( ~ 2650) 2.800 OAL
IF you went with 8208XBR
@ 42.5 - 42.8ish you'd be pushing them 2665 - 2700 ish
I was going to use this 748 pull down and suggested to me to try the XBR. Not as temp sensitive as 748. it's a short stick, meters very well and in my 700 20" 1:12 i am meeting or exceeding accuracy with Hornady 168 BTHP-M , compared to factory Hornady 168.
Drop by and i'll give you some to try out.
Thanks Jim, might head out to Pawnee SC to test. Just wanted some first hand expierence on these.
I have 8208XBR, IMR4895, IMR4064 and H4895
IMR 4046 I use 42.1 and a Barnes or Hornady 175. I get 2640 out of my 24" Savage. It's a safe loading.
I've seen exceptional velocity from people using H4895. Work up your load obviously.
2000MR is very good for the heavies as well.
Loaded up on the hotter end of the scale since I only have a 20" Barrel. OCW to find a node first. Now I need a magnetospeed to check ES/SD.

Ran my new loads with a magnetospeed and gained 100+ in MV. Primer shows a little pressure. Used the same configuration except the primer was a Fed210M instead of just the 210.
North Spring range UT, 30 deg, 30 mph wind from 9:00
600 yard steel was my target.
Shot 10 rounds of the Varget load - 2,610 average.
H4895 in .3gr increments were 2,694, 2,712 and 2,725

42 grains of 4895 is the classic 308 load for the 175's (some people use it for 168's and 180's also)
Bison Tactical in Boulder had Varget last week.

Frederick is a good guy to deal with.
I have a new batch to whittle down to the final load, .1 increments to shoot at 200 yards, then group at 100 then out to distance. Pawnee SC this weekend. If it turns out to be my go to formula I will have some Varget to trade >>> H4895.
Just need some range time. Anyone going out anytime soon?
A little chilly at Pawnee SC this morning and it's a ghost town. Started with my lightest of loads I brought and they are shooting faster than before. Hard bolt lift on the 2730 ish shots and ok lift on the 2705 ish shots. These should have been in the 2690 area. Groups very well and about .1 mil higher than my current load.
After I got home I inspected the brass. Wow it really flowed into the ejector pin hole about .002". Everything else looked fine except the primers pushed out real easy. Good thing I stopped and didn't trash any more cases. Reloaded a new batch to find a lower node, dropped 1.5 grains and stepped up .3 for my next outing.
Too bad the load was over a usable pressure since it did it's job on the target.

Went to Pawnee Ass Land today and finalized the proper (lower) charge weight for my OCW. I'm reading 2,687 avg. on the Magneto Speed now for MV with the H4895. I'm at 44.0 (Green) 44.3 (Red) grain weight and will settle on the this later. ES is 16 and the group looks good. The vertical middle row was with the Magneto Speed on and I was just getting MV for three charge weights. I was shooting with altered elevation and windage for each group.
