Silly me! I have never hunted the pheasant opener and unfortunately never will again! Holy people! I took my almost 4 year old son out because he has been asking me like crazy to go hunting. Really wanted to shoot a bird so he could get even more excited about hunting but the pup and i only kicked up a couple hens! Sure wish i had some public to take him to! He did awesome.. almost made it through 2 whole fields before he asked me to carry him! I was proud of that and he still had fun even though we didnt pull the trigger and asked when we could go again.

Anyone else get out? If anyone has a spot i have a lab that loves flushing! And a boy that loves hunting!

I'm lucky enough to get to work today, get to go to good ole Mexico....

but sometime this week hoping to get out into the field. My English setter has been giving me his sad face and wants to get out.

I have several bottle openers but I don't have a pheasant opener. Just saying.

FYI: All public hunting in Colorado is overcrowded.

A small pocketknife does the job quite nicely

Could hear a few of the neighbors taking a shot now and again today.

The game bird outfit up the road about a mile was doing a brisk business this morning.

I went out and we got 1 rooster, flushed another but he flushed way early. Ran into a bunch of hens.

Overcrowded is an understatement. I refuse to hunt waterfowl on public anymore, was tired of 4 groups cramming themselves on a pond no bigger than a house.

I hit Kansas this year. We did pretty good. Took the older kids for the first time. We ended up with 14 roosters and 30 something quail. They had a blast and lots of trigger time.

We were in South Dakota last week 9 birds first day 25 to 40 winds with snow, the bird would pop up in the wind and gone. Second day no wind all 12 guys limited. All private land near Winner. The new Benelli 828U was fun and did not disappoint.

As the year goes on Colorado hunters will move to other opportunities ie waterfowl or big game. Late year especially after some cold weather and snow will bunch up the birds. Keep trying as the season goes most in Colorado are fair weather pheasant hunters.

We went to Nebraska a couple of weeks ago. Saw lots but they have been shot at since the end of October. Weather was cool but not cold. Still crops so birds all spread out. Kids in our group got a couple Only had a shot on one bird.

Had the classic situation of not being prepared at all times for a bird. I asked with my neighbor to come out for this NE hunt. I had just called the hotel manager and wanted to make sure a couple of items I left in the fridge at checkout was not going to get throw out. We had walked two pivot corners and were on our way back to the truck. Sure enough my phone goes off. Manager calling me back after church to let me know the items were in the office. At the precise moment a rooster pops up at the end of the cover. Mind you we had just covered the ground on the way to the other corner. On the way out and back my pups must have been upwind and did not smell it. My brain kept my hands moving to get my phone as this big boy gets up. My neighbor had his gun in his left hand and by the time we both got engaged the bird was out of shooting range. Sheesh. Got to always be ready. They are sneaky and not the first and probably not the last time they get the best of me.

I like to carry my phone for two reasons. One to monitor my steps/distance. The other is in case I lock my keys in the truck and need to call Toyota to unlock my doors.

Let you know how we do when we go back over the new years weekend.

I have next Monday and Tuesday off. May head out with my pups here in Colorado just for kicks.

Ya..ill probably head out again...just need the time! And ya those suckers always pop up when you're not ready! I love when they hop up at your feet and it scares the crap out of you and then you look at your dog like really? I love watching the dogs when they catch the scent and take a quick 90 degree turn and then you hope its a rooster! If i had mondays and Tuesdays off i would head out with ya..good luck!

Pheasants in Colorado can be really tough. There's a few "Youth hunt" areas that I've heard great things about though. They are only open to youth hunters, but others can go along and hunt too. I'd search through DOW for next year and find a place like that, least once your son get's old enough to get is Hunter Safety down and a tag.
