So my daughter really wants another dog since our oldest Labrador passed away 5 months ago. We live out on 5 acres with another lab and a medium size hound dog that rules the roost. They have a large sun room to get out of the cold but have a lot of steps to get up to it.

So here is the question. She really wants a dachshund which I think is a little to small for our living conditions. I would like some suggestions for a different dog that would fill her wants and still be able to handle the living conditions. We will be adopting whatever dog we settle on either from a local shelter or breed rescue. I have told her to research dogs but she still keeps coming back to the dachshund.

Thanks for the help

I would also like a dog that could play with the lab.

I'd maybe remind her if you are rural, coyotes and for a dachshund, even eagle/hawk may get the dog if not kept indoors.

We have had neighbors with Dachshunds, Three out of three had screwed up backs with nerve damage as they got older.

I say go with the dachshund. Those things were bred to hunt badgers so I would think it would be a hearty breed for the farm.

Get her what she wants. The dog and her will adapt to a life style that works for both of them. We spend too much time as parents telling kids "no" with weak excuses about what-ifs and things that could happen. In the end, she'll appreciate the time you got her the dog she wanted, and all the time she spent having it, regardless of if it develops a hip problem or meets an untimely end.

My MIL lives on the property with us and has been talking about a new dog. We're pushing her towards a Corgi or Jack Russel as well. I'm curious to hear more thoughts on the subject. We have 2 labs and a Bracco (Italian hunting dog that I'd never heard of until my wife decided she wanted one 5 years ago). Not recommending the Bracco but he is pretty darn cool and it's a chance to show him off. 67962

I am not a dog person, didnt want one, but I am married.

That being said, a beagle or basset, or even a mix of the two is just the right amount of weiner dog mixed with big dog that won't be abducted by your local owl. To top it off, I CANNOT make our beagle/basset mix bite me. A kid could punch him in the eyeball and he would walk away.

ETA: We have a 50+lb beagle/something(basset) that is peaceful as hell. Will not bite ( Ihave tested this), but will growl if he needs to. He is even terrified of our 2lb parrot and will not attack her. Dog even brought a baby pigeon into the living room witbout hurting it (just wanted to sniff it). Problem is that he does not appreciate being left alone.

Maybe take her to a rescue and see if she finds one there that she falls in love with. We did this with our last dog and he was the best dog we ever had. He went down at 18 years old. RIP buddy boy.

CORGI or Jack Russell if you want small.

Both are great. We've had 7 Jacks since 94. All have been great, great dogs. But a word of caution...you have to really like dogs to live with a JRT. A confident JRT will run the house if you don't stay on top of them and most of them are VERY high energy. And they stay high energy for most of their lives.

We lost our little Corgi a few years back to kidney disease and I've been looking for a Corgi pup for months now. They are really hard to find.

ETA: I grew up with several dachsunds, too. Loved 'em all.

But I'm kind of on the same page as Irving...let her pick what she wants. But I would encourage her to try to find one at a shelter.

I knew a lady with several dachshunds and she had ramps all over the house for the dogs to get up on couches and over steps. Bad backs eventually as another said ^. But it worked and they were happy dogs.

I have both and love both. Warning they both are stubborn (the jack More so) so start researching on the clicker training method or likewise. Training a JRT is no joke but if you do it right you can end up with a hell of a smart dog and loyal companion.

Does she want a full size or a miniature dachshund? Growing up, we had some full size and they were pretty tough. They still had back issues as well. Currently, we have a German Shepard and a Bassett. When the GS gets a little too rough, the bassett puts him in his place. The Bassetts can have back problems as well. I would say make her keep on researching and then get her what she wants. Christmas is coming soon.

She wants miniature but I really don't think that will work.

So what did you end up doing?

We are waiting till summer when she is home all the time to be able to take care of it and train it. Still have decided on a breed yet but I would like her to look at the pounds when the time comes.
