Congrats! Looks like you're having a great time.
I'm not a noob...but I didn't do any riding from about 13 until I was 48. After 35 years I rediscovered the joy that is riding a motorcycle. It's a good feeling to strap it on and hit the road.
Nice to see a new rider getting out and enjoying it

I've always recommended to new riders to start on a dirt bike... you'll get familiar with what it's like to lose traction in different ways, and after time reacting properly will become second nature...
They can take some abuse, and it's not going to destroy them when they get dropped.
Some have taken that advise, others wind up dropping their first road bike in short order.
ETA: Some great photos there, too!
I started out on dirt bikes. When I finally decided to get a street bike it was a very easy transition.
I had a friend who rode street bikes but had never been on a dirt bike. The first time we talked him into getting on a dirt bike it was hilarious. He was so used to having traction that sliding around on the dirt bike really freaked him out and he was really slow that day. He got a little better over time but just when he thought he was getting the hang of it he came up short trying to hit a big double and snapped his handlebars and broke his collarbone. Wasn't long after that he sold the dirt bike.
It's all fun and games till you brake your arms [Coffee]
I'd still ride if I could affford a bike, have a fun safe summer!

All right!! I am looking for a "straight" handle bar. No angle, no drops and no mussing around. Straight!!! Google has left me flat (not straight). I have a Rossignol 722 with a relaxed sweep. Too relaxed for me.
Also looking for about 2-3" riser. I know, I'm picky. Looking for a more upright sitting angle with a relaxed hand position.
Dropped the rear end down about 1 3/4" and can now "flat foot" the bike. Big difference than before. Still trying to work out the ergonomics.
Any ideas? TIA!

Off Road MC shop. They carry bars with different sweeps. Is your bar 7/8", 1 or 11/4". When changing bars check brake lines, throttle cables and electrical , to verify there's no need to shorten or extend them.
If they don't have the sweep / style you're looking for perhaps a piece of correct diameter seamless tubing will do.
OR.... check with TFogger, he is the go to guy for on & off road on the forum
To each their own, but straight bars seem like they would be pretty uncomfortable.
But, like I said, to each their own. Maybe that will work for you.
Thanks Kazoo, I will give him a try.

This carries over from Mt. biking. With elbows out, only the the outer part of the palm is connecting with the bar. This is causing my fingers to go numb.
I'm dealing with some numbness myself. Mine is more about wrist angles I think. Going to be swapping my bars to something different in the near future myself.
If you haven't tried already, you might get away with rotating the bars you have either forward or back and see if that helps out any.

Did that yesterday and it did help some.
I think you should put some 16" ape hangers on it. You know, for a nice, upright seating position.
This "ape" enough?

Look into Rox Risers. You can adjust them in all kinds of positions forward and back, as well as getting the height you are looking for.
Regarding lowering the rear. You also need to adjust the front tubes in the tripple clamps. If not, you are going to have some strange handling. Even dangerous if you are going at any rate of speed. Do some google foo about the SAG of a dirt bike.

Eh. Not any worse in the handling department than riding double with a fat chick. Plus, you can only drop the tubes in the clamps so far before they hit the handlebars.

Those aren't ape hangers, they're part of a recycled jungle gym....
I saw a guy on Powers a few months ago with handlebars not too far from those, AND a hand shifter. Looked like a ridiculous way to ride.
