HELP! CV/Axle boot 2005 Trailblazer

So my son-in-law was replacing the upper ball joint, and 'pulled' out the axle and boot, without taking off axle nut. Trying to reassemble, and he sees what appears to be 2 boots at the CV:

What's that 'inner' black boot sticking up in the photo? Is he toast or can this be salvaged?

Looks like he just tore the boot in half. There is a band that holds the boot onto the sleeve, and since he didn't release the band first, the boot tore.
Here is a picture of a CV axle I just recently removed. The boot on the left is the inside boot, which is the one it looks like he tore. You can see in my photo that I don't yet have the band around the boot for install.

His options now are to:
1) Completely remove the axle and replace all the boots.
2) Completely remove the axle and replace with a reman (although it might not need that).
3) Try and remove that side of the axle in place enough to slide a new boot on and regrease everything, in place.
4) Buy one of those universal two piece boots where you place the boot on the axle, then use an adhesive to seal both sides together.

Personally, I'd go for number 3, but that's because I just went through this procedure last week. Not trying to plug my thread at all, but page two has pictures of me tearing the axle down, cleaning, replacing boots, and repacking with grease. It should be similar and the photos may be helpful. If he runs to the store now, he could probably get everything back together by tonight.

I don't know if they are still around, but J.C Whitney mail order (or online now) used to carry a split CV joint boot that can be installed with out removing the axle. It glued/clamped at the split seam.

The boot "repair kit" things are supposed to be notoriously crappy. I'd only use one for a short temporary fix.

I opted to replace one of the axles completely even though it only had torn boot because a new axle was less than $100. For all the work of taking it off and reinstall, I thought that was the best course to take.

A good boot can easily run in the $30 range and the axles are pretty cheap. Most people just replace the entire axle.

I paid $27 and $33 per boot for mine, and when I finally decided to look it up found that it would have been cheaper to just buy reman axles from the get go. If you only have one boot to replace though, getting one good boot will save you money.

For lack of a better term, that other piece is kind of a bushing for the boot. That piece kind of fits over the part where the large end of the boot goes and the boot goes over it and clamps down.
