My oldest brother called me yesterday stating that Mom went to the ER. She's now in ICU with a whole list of stuff, sounds like her heart's giving up and she's going septic with infections everywhere. Any one of her ailments can be life-threatening, and all them up and they're not giving her very long.
Mom doesn't want to live on any mechanical devices, has lived a good long life and is really looking forward to her Home in Heaven to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!
My brothers, Dad and I now get to decide what to do next...
And I need to find the most economical way to get back to NY state.
Anyone know if the airlines do some kind of 'emergency/grieving/family death' kind of discount rate?
Thx for reading and praying/thoughts...

Prayers for you and your family. Not sure on the airlines. They used to back in the day, but who knows about this time and age. I would definitely start contacting them and see what you can find. Safe travels as well.

Look at the rates right now, many of them have very low fares right now if you are will to travel odd days.

They still do bereavement fares but they're only like a 10% discount (not like the half price or even free-on-stanby that they used to do). Buying tickets early through a site like hotwire is probably your best bet. Downside is you don't know exactly when you want to fly so you'll need to fly out asap and be prepared to stay out there for a while.
Prayers inbound.
Sorry OP, prayers coming your way.

My experience as well. I had to catch a last minute flight from FL to CO for my grandfather a few years ago and still paid around $800. Glad I did though.
Kayak can give you price prediction info and flexible searches.
In our thoughts and prayers, buddy.

Jet blue can have you in the tri-state area by 6 tomorrow. Flying out tomorrow on united staying till saturday, after thanksgiving is $551 per . The down side of any flight is Holiday time.
As for bereavement flights Don't bother. They cost as much if not more, than getting a flight by phone (not on line).
Also DO NOT use hotwire or other on line discount place. We did it once and never again. You get bumped first, seats changed (no guarantee seats) no matter what they say AND if there's an issue. The airlines will tell you, talk to hotwire.
With that said. prayers and positive thoughts for you and your family.

Prayers for you and your family.
May your mom slide gently into heaven, surrounded by family and love.
I don't have any tips for airline travel/discounts, but I'm hoping for the best for you.

Prayers for you, your mom and your family. May your mothers transition home the the Lord be smooth and graceful.
Horrible thing to go through on your birthday.
My folks are coming to that point, so I know where you're coming from.
Prayers going out to your family! God bless!
My prayers out to you and your family Mark. I've been going through sort of the same thing. Watching my moms health dwindle as time goes by.
Mom had a triple bypass 2 years ago and it's been a slow decline. Only a matter of time. Not looking forward to the phone call.
All we can do is try to spend as much quality time with them as we can.
God bless and if you ever need anything you have my number Bro.

as for airline discounts it doesn't hurt to call and ask. I know there are times they have done lots in the past for folks

Prayers for you and family and apologize for the late response. 10 years ago the airlines offered a discount savings for family emergency. In 2005 when I was hurt in the Marines and sent to a hospital in HI my mom got a flight out while I was in ICU. She flew United who flies the military mostly (or used to). Just call and explain the situation and hope for a deal. Hope this helps.
