What happened to the sales line that because of its placement it would never be shut down for weather? Never have delays? 24/7/365 open and running.

The de-icing equipment broke down, not simply weather issues.
Howard Dean was trashing Denver on Twitter.
A blizzard a few years after opening that stranded travelers on the road to the point the guard had to be activated to rescue them. Guess we're back to Mother Nature wins. It has closed during severe weather and other issues ever since

I think the definition of "closed" is different for some of you.
The only time I can think of the airport being closed was during 9/11. That means that no aircraft were coming in or going out.
Now, Pena has closed several times that I can remember which basically makes the airport closed off but I do remember there were still flights going in and out. The way the runways are arranged though, and with the snow mitigation DIA has (none better), the only thing closing that airport is when employees can't get to it.
The only problem with the airport is that waste of a baggage system that they failed on. Well that and the way the security screening ended up. That main terminal was not designed for that. If you remember before 9/11, it was beautiful in there and wide open. I hear they are working on fixing that now though.
If you really want to blame someone, blame the airlines. They are the ones that operate on the thinnest of margins in terms of money and time. One thing gets tweaked and it throws the whole system off. The airlines are the one scrambling though, the airport is just sitting back twiddling its thumbs waiting on the airlines.
With this latest thing, I would bet it was due to airlines contracting out some service that failed. Airlines contracting their work out is a place they save big bucks but it is also the #1 place where customer service problems originate.

This is what the problem was. United couldn't get the departing planes de-iced, that clogged up the gates, arriving planes didn't have any gates open to go to. And the delays/cancellations followed.

I seem to recall it was a game of "Not It!" played by government entities denying responsibility for plowing Pena.

Same thing that happened to the baggage handling system. DIA was a way for a bunch of politicians to sell their worthless prairie land for a killing. There was nothing wrong with Stapleton, and in fact they had just overhauled all the concourses just months before. Then after closing the old airport they tear down the runway bridge over I-70, then a few years later build another bridge over 70 almost in exactly the same place. I could go on but you get the drift. The whole thing smells as bad as the stadium that they just had to build when the old mile high could have been refurbished for much less money, but hey, we got more skyboxes, and less seats for the rabble, and Bolen has made out like a bandit on taxpayer dollars. Given an "open wallet", govt will burn through money like a pothead in a "dispensary".

Not even going to stick my hand in this bag of... DIA is an anomaly, wrapped in a conundrum and topped with misinformation. That said, there is more wrong with some posts here than with DIA.

They also stopped DEN arrivals yesterday morning for about 45min due to a fire alarm and evacuation at the TRACON. Crappy morning all around.
