I'm looking for something for my G20.4. I've had good luck with DeSantis Speed Scabbards (non-retention, leather, OWB) for other handguns, but thought I'd see what people here really like. Being a plastic gun, maybe a plastic holster?
Also, if any of you have tried out the Blackhawk CQC or Safariland ALS retention holsters, let me know your thoughts. Thanks!
Kevin
I've been considering a G-Code SOC. No experience with it to recommend it though. I just prefer something that really protects and secures the handgun if I'm going to be hiking around in the woods.

I have a kydex from colorado holster that i like a lot. Just a plain external molded to accept a 20 with an X300U
ALS Safariland. They run bewteen $35 and $60 depending on model and where you shop.

Funkeymonkey1111--does the Colo Holster keep the pistol's butt tight against your torso? I've tried out a few kydex before that kept the butt way away from me--like the Springfield Duty Gear stuff. I need something that keeps it close.
Blackhawk feels cheaper and I'm not a fan of the retention. Safariland takes a little getting used to but is pretty good. Both don't hold it tight to the body.
Shockingly the glock factory holster works great and is $10 for what you're looking for in plastic I'd give that a shot.

Thanks Wulf. I'll give the cheapie a try. Maybe they have it at Rockyourglock...
My only complaint about the Glock holster is it is kind of a belt slide style and the pistol usually sticks out the end. Well, except maybe the 26/27.
I actually saw one of my buddy's handguns pop out of his holster when he got into his vehicle. Apparently the muzzle went down on top of the seat belt buckle and pushed the gun up and out.
Ever since then I decided to stay away from holsters that let the muzzle protrude from the bottom.

Why the need to keep the gun tucked in close? Are you talking IWB?

IMO, you want a good retention holster for backcountry carry. You don't want to risk your handgun getting bounced or snagged and lost while bushwhacking through the thickets, meandering the forest or climbing a mountain.
Woods carry is not like grocery store carry. Field use demands strong equipment. Whatever rig you get make sure it's tough enough to hold your gun whether you take a dunk in a river or go rolling down a slope.

I'd like to have an Diamond D Guide's Choice chest holster for my 586, but too cheap to buy one. Not sure it would work for 6" either, only 4" is listed, but the end is open. Could do the 5" 1911 model too.....

I like it close to my torso so it doesn't knock into things. Plus, I carry under an outer shirt and don't want it printing.

Gotcha.

A little different choice on my end because my "woods gun" more times than not is a 4" S&W 629 carried in a Galco Phoenix crossdraw. For me it works better when I have a pack on.

Nice!
I almost always have a backpack on in the woods. Hated the way the hip belt rides with a belt holster and was hard to draw. Found this and really like it. Works with everything from a camelback day hiking or riding to my multiday pack loaded down. Or even by itself if that's all I want.

In the woods? Hummer called it, a good retention holster for any environment. Be it a basic walk, slip in the stream, or lose footing and go sideways down a hill.

In the woods?
Yes--I don't want to freak out other hikers and sometimes I may stop at a gas station, etc., and don't want to take the holster off.

For concealed carry of my G20, I use a Blade Tech IWB.
For open carry, I have a variety of Blade Tech and other holster manufacturers that have been adapted to the G-Code system. This includes 1911 and big Smith 629 holsters with the Blade Tech level II retention system. The nice thing about the G-Code system is I can have a mounting ring on my pack, on my belt, in my car, etc..., as well as the paddle, drop, and thigh rig attachments, and can attach anything I want to them. It really is a remarkable, though bulky, system.
I prefer Kydex for the great outdoors because it doesn't retain water or sweat like leather can.
another vote for Hill People Gear- have a couple and they work great. All you need is a couple brewery/life is good/Colorado Mtn Club/CO flag patches on them, and people will just assume you are an REI member- even if your chromed Desert Eagle doesn't fully fit inside.

Seconding this. Lets me use the waist strap on my pack. Also provides a place to keep my GPS and power bars for the hike.
