Throwing this one out there for kicks.
Any of you hand built a single shot from scratch? Did you need a mill and lathe? Where did you get your plans from? How hard was it, how much time?

(I am getting an itch to hand build something with my son, and teach him tool use and how much can be done with very little.)

Most definitely a mill, lathe and the knowledge to make it work. Plus knowing what materials to use so it doesn't hand grenade in your face when fired.

Buy a remy 700 single shot receiver. The barrel can be cut, threaded and crowned in house. A basic stock to be bedded, modified as you see fit.

Forming the rifled barrel takes the most time. A rolling block or a break action are the easiest. You'll have about 300 hours at a minimum

A shotgun is probably the easiest firearm to hand-build, because it doesn't require a rifled barrel. You can build a functioning, safe-to-fire shotgun using commercial schedule gas pipe as your barrel.
