So, I went to the Palmer Lake post office to get my passport renewed. I had an appointment for 10:00 AM. I get there, the lady at the counter said the guy that does passport applications is in a meeting and she doesn't know how long it'll be. So, I wait 5-10 mins; but nothing. The lady said I could try coming back later, and tomorrow is booked solid. We'll I took my lunch hour to do this, so I can't make it back before they close (and that's why I made the appointment). I ended up rescheduling for Monday morning.

I leave all frustrated as it was a waste of time, driving from the Springs. (I was told the Palmer Lake post office has quicker turn around times for passports and that's why I went there.) As I'm leaving the parking lot, and turning on to Highway 105 I casually rolled through the Stop sign. Low and behold, there's a cop driving my direction and sees it. 20 mins later, $137 ticket and 4 points. What an awful way to end that wasted trip.

My question... the policeman said if I show up in court on my date, the judge usually cuts the points in half. Has anyone had the unfortunate experience of dealing with this? Is this "usually" a good chance, as I dont want 4 points to increase my car insurance rates. I haven't had a ticket otherwise in about 14 years.

Thanks!

Usually = ALWAYS in this state.

Call the municipal court and see if you can't speak to the city attorney who handles cases there. Give them a brief explanation of the ticket (30 seconds or less) and ask if they normally make an offer and if so, what is the normal offer for this type of offense. You can ask if you need to appear or whether you can just pay by mail or at the Clerk's window. More than likely you will need to appear as the judge will need to agree to the offer.

Lots of reasons why we make mistakes but that doesn't change the fact that we make mistakes. I hope you get the points dropped. They can get you a double hit if your insurance company takes notice.

Give it a shot - can't hurt.

Don't want a ticket? Obey traffic laws. Don't quite understand what the passport experience has to do with it.

I am surprised it didn't have a automatic reduction if paid quickly.

Better than Black Friday. Get two stories for the price of one!

If it's anything like the 2 dozen speeding tickets I've gotten just showing up will get the points cut. You won't get the price cut by much

So? If one is not fit to drive, one should not drive. I've been put in the hospital twice due to people who were "out of sorts mentally/emotionally/not paying attention" and ran stop signs.

Did you not understand and want to understand why he prefaced his actual question with a largely irrelevant backstory, or did you want to bitch?

Oh lord. Rolling through a PARKING LOT stop sign while turning onto the roadway is hardly running a stop sign. I wasn't there, but my guess would be OP at least checked for oncoming traffic or there would have been other charges.

Ease up Francis.

In short yes they will cut the points, no they will not cut the fine.

Thanks all! I'll go to the court date and see how many points they'll cut; I'm more worried about the points as I do not want a hike in insurance premiums.

Yes, I was a little "emotional", just frustrated at the situation, does this make me one of those "mentally unstable" persons we hear about on the news as of late [LOL]? So, no, I didn't make the full 2 second stop as required; I rolled at about 3 MPH , but yes I made sure no traffic was coming through before I went ahead. And no not all of my guns are 922r compliant... I'm not denying I broke the law, just looking for a little easement on my crappy day.

If you're Lic is that clean go for the reduced / stay out of trouble 1 year plan. If you don't get another ticket, they drop the points to 0 after the year. You still pay the fine. Or go for the 2 pt's (which seems to be the statewide pay us, here's 2pts. scam) they been doing for a decade or so.

I don't think this guy's ever made a post where he wasn't bitching, and like obama, tried to make this about him, because he was put in the hospital twice.

fportmen45, do you really think OP was somehow compromised in his driving from the story?

Awesome - I'm on the "list"...

How would your responses have differed had he said he had a ND due to to his Post Office induced mental duress?

Personal responsibility, anyone?

If he had said ND on USPS property and got nabbed, he wouldn't have posted and we wouldn't be having this conversation.

If you go to court or the DA's office, wear a suit and tie. Don't wear shorts, 420 t-shirt & flip flops. I am not a lawyer, but I have won all cases against me. I have even profited from some. Good luck!
