View Full Version : Ideas for getting a part machined

I have an HK P9S .45 Target that has a broken part. (One of two "wings" on the buffer housing support is broken off. It looks to have been made of pot metal.) I haven't been able to find a replacement, but since the pistol is pretty valuable, it would be worth getting a custom part made using the current part as a model. Any ideas who could do that locally? If not locally, any other ideas? I know it won't be cheap, but any ideas how much such a service would cost?
Thanks,
Kevin
Which number specifically in the schematic below?

68236You can see the missing piece just to the left of the screw.
From the little bit I have read on this, your buffer is dead, it killed the buffer housing. I'd try and find a online HK club that might have access to parts and a fix.
Ebay had some 9MM parts. Might try contacting the seller for information.

If you can not find any option, I can give it a shot, I have hand made parts for close tolerance applications before

Thanks. I replaced the buffer and everything looks ship shape except this one piece. I've tried the HK forums, google searches, contacting HK parts vendors, eBay, and haven't had luck. I've been told more than once that the .45 part is pretty much ubobtanium.

That would be great, thanks! Let me keep looking around just to make sure, and if I can't get the part, let's talk. Any idea what you'd charge?

That's SOP for H&K parts in general, especially if it's a Must Have part.
iI'm guessing that the cost per part will be much less if you make 30-40 etc? Then sell them online after testing in your pistol.
Just a reminder -
An open letter to the gun community from HK’s marketing department:
In a world of compromises, some people put the bullets in the magazine backwards…But it doesn’t matter, because our gun is on the cover of the Rainbow Six video games. Look how cool that SEAL coming out of the water looks… If you buy a $2,000 SOCOM, you will be that cool of an operator too. And chicks will dig you.
At HK, we stuck a piston on an AR15, just like a bunch of other companies have done, dating back to about 1969. However ours is better, because we refuse to sell it to civilians. Because you suck, and we hate you.
Our XM8 is the greatest rifle ever developed. It may melt, and it doesn’t fit any accessories known to man, but that is your fault. If you were a real operator, you would love it. Once again, look at Rainbow Six, that G36 sure is cool isn’t it? Yeah, you know you want one. And by the way, check out our new HK45. We decided that humans don’t need to release the magazine with their thumbs. If you were a really manly Teutonic operator, you would be able to reach the controls. Plus we’ve fired 100,000,000 rounds through one with zero malfunctions, and that was while it was buried in a lake of molten lava, on the moon.
If you don’t believe us, it is because you aren’t a real operator.
By the way, our cheap, mass-produced, stamped sheet metal guns like the G3 and MP5 are the bestest things ever, and totally worth asinine scalpers prices, but note that cheap, mass-produced, stamped sheet metal guns from other countries are commie garbage. Not that it matters, because you’re civilians, so we won’t sell them to you anyway. Because you suck, and we hate you, but we know you’ll be back. We can beat you down like a trailer park wife, but you’ll come back, you always do.
Buy our stuff.
Sincerely
HK Marketing Department HK. Because you suck. And we hate you.
Sorry. I couldn't stop myself. I do hope you get running again.

LOL, I would want to take a look first, but it wouldn't be by the hour.
Depending on the makeup of the part, I may be able to build up the area with my tig and then work it back to the correct dimensions.
To me it would be worth the challenge

Fortunately I think I found the part. That said, I'd love to work with you on fixing the broken as a spare if you are willing. If it is easy enough, you could make a little cottage industry. I hear these parts are as rare as hen's teeth. The pieces that break off are just a few millimeters a side. It looks like a pot metal piece, so I don't know how welding would work. But you are the expert.
This might be a part that a carbon fiber 3D printer could improve on.

Probably. It just holds the buffer housing in two axes, and allows it to move a few mm back and forth on the third axis. No real stress. It's made of shitty metal, so HK clearly didn't expect it to be strong.

Yeah, I would be interested in giving it a shot, from the research I have done it is the same part in the 9mm and the 45

Great. I'll get in touch with you by PM in a couple weeks when things calm down.
