My dad had the opportunity to get to know him a bit and spoke with respect about him being a "decent guy". High praise from a man of few words

My Dad's first job out of college was working at Astronautics in San Diego on the Atlas booster. He was there the day the Mercury 7 were paraded through the engineering department. Their admonition was "we don't know how to do your jobs, but do good work..." The launch failure rate of the Atlas was approaching 50% at the time.

We attended Scott Carpenter's funeral in Boulder in 2013 where Glenn gave the eulogy. He perfect example of a true American hero and dedicated public servant, even with the "D" behind his name.

and getting paid off from the Clintons..... He was a better military member than he was a congressman unfortunately.

Can we keep politics out of this for at least a few days??!! Respect what the Colonel accomplished at the least. Thank you.

I respect what he accomplished in one of his careers. Everybody is accountable for their actions. If they have a great military career that doesn't change the facts. I grew up thinking "Duke" Cunningham was a great guy because he shot down migs over Vietnam, but since he went to prison for bribery that kind of ruined it for me.

Kennedy Space Center has a great tour of the launch pads. I have been to the block house that launched the Friendship 7 mission. Go see it if you can.

Glenn holds the record for the oldest person in space at 77 years of age. He may not have impressed me with his work as a politician, but it took a huge set of testicles to voluntarily ride a missile into the vacuum of space during the infancy of our space program.

RIP to an American pioneer. I was born and raised on the space coast of Florida and watched first hand all of the launches from the mid 60's on so the space program and astronauts where a big part of my childhood. God Speed.
