View Full Version : Is .40 too harsh for a slide mounted red dot?

So I've decided that next time I find myself with a little bit of extra money, I'm going to buy a new EDC piece; A SIG P320 RX Compact.

Currently I carry a .40 and almost all the auto-loaders laying around the house are .40s. I've made a concerted effort to limit my calibers to just a couple (.40 .357mag and the wife has a 9x17) and currently don't have any 9x19 guns but I'm wondering if the .40 would be too punishing to the red dot and if so should I go with a 9mm or do these little red dot sights handle the recoil from a .40 as well as a 9.

No, I don't buy the bushwah that 9mm sucks and all calibers that start with a 4 are the hammer of Thor ... I just decided a while back to economize my calibers and most of my guns were .40 (and I had a whole mess of .40 and only a box or two of 9) so that was why I chose to stick with it. So I don't mind adding 9x19 to the stable especially since it doesn't look like guns are going to be banned in a couple of months.

Anyway, did some googling and didn't find anything so I was wondering if anyone has tested the durability of slide mounted optics or knows someone who has.

I haven't heard of them not working on a .40S&W. Buy from a reputable manufacturer would be my opinion.

I know for a fact that the Burris Fastfire will survive the punishment of a Desert Eagle 50. The Zeiss red dot lasted less than one magazine. I would think it can handle a 40 just fine.

Well I wonder about the SIG Romeo, because apparently they've delayed release of the RX models because they want to get the Romeo "just right".

Really I wonder if it wouldn't be smarter to just buy a regular P320 Compact and send the slide to someone to have it machined for an RMR instead (the dual illumination one really appeals to me since it doesn't need batteries ... of course Tritium vials don't last forever).

Here's SIG's page on this gun:

I'm running a Burris fast fire 3 on my XDm 5.25 in 40s&w without issue so far.

About how many rounds you have through it with the red dot?
How well does it hold zero?

Roughly 500 rounds so far, no zero issues after I put loc-tite on the mounting screws. It came loose after the first 10-15 rounds without loc-tite.
