View Full Version : Gloves for Airforce and Army mechanics?
Most civilian mechanics now wear protective gloves while working on vehicles.
Just curious is the military mechanics are issued gloves for such work?

When I was in the Navy both of my squadrons bought Mechanix gloves for the maintainers. It wasn't an issued item but more of a "end of the year money" purchase. Various pubs did state that nitrile gloves were to be worn for certain MX actions.
Trying to visualize my mid 70's motor pool with nitrile gloves.
My unit specifically banned mechanix gloves because they turn into straight napalm if they catch fire. Nomex was the preferred material, and camelback actually makes an awesome glove that's great for literally everything, I use the hell out of mine from shooting to remodel work.

I made sure my mechanic was well-equipped with Mechanix gloves and anything else he needed but I had a healthy supply account and a superintendent and supply NCO who believed in taking care of the troops like I did (not that it would have mattered if they'd disagreed but it's nicer when everyone is on the same sheet of music).

before we did any trips to real FOBs with PX's, we always got a shopping list from our favorite mechanics: dip, smokes, soda, magazines etc. Guess what platoon never waited in line for work? :)

Link?
i don't really love them for auto work, but I use mechanix exclusively for cycling (all disciplines) since I only use full finger/no pad.

They were banned for in flight use by us flyers but it didn't really matter for the maintainers. Once those gloves are soaked with JP-8 and various oils the flame retardant properties go out the window.
Dunno if they will work for ya.... but I like maxiflex atg gloves

Don't the Air Force just use their pockets?

In the 70's we were issued leather gloves. Kinda like what ranchers wear. Most uncomfortable gloves money could buy.
