View Full Version : Assumptions
So, usually, making assumptions isn't the best thing to do.
But sometimes it isn't all that bad.
Thought I'd start this thread about making assumptions that are probably a safe bet.
I'll start it off with this one...
I'm assuming that when your artificial Christmas tree sheds more needles than a real tree it's probably about time for a new one.
In the case of the artificial tree shedding needles, you have an indication of something which makes it more of an inference. Assumptions typically are conclusions drawn without proof or evidence to lead to the conclusion. I would have assumed you knew that.

I would assume that the sun is going to rise tomorrow...........but then again, the sun doesn't rise, we float around it. It appears that it rises.
Gravity however, is always correct in that it will be effective in having anything that becomes loose, goes directly towards the center of our planets mass.
I assume that gravity will remain to be constant, irregardless of my or anyone elses wishes.

Gravity varies by altitude.
Gravity varies by altitude. Gravity varies by your mass as well.
An assumption is just something taken for granted. The veracity of any assumption is dependent on the knowledge and depth of understanding of the topic by the person assuming. The reason many people assume that most assumptions are inaccurate is that they are exposed to more assumptions of ignorant people lacking critical thought process than to assumptions made by people with a deep knowledge of the subject.
How many people assumed that the Cubs, Army and Trump would all end up losers in 2016? What were their assumptions based on?
An assumption is a safe bet when you have facts, understanding and a lack of bias or emotion as inputs. They are flawed when they are based on unfounded feelings.
I can assume that if there is an even layer of snow on the ground that it fell from the sky. I can assume that if there is a pile of snow on my driveway, that my neighbor threw it there because he is pissed I have a heated driveway. I can assume that if my wife is watching a Christmas movie on the Hallmark channel, there will be a fantasy ending.
I assume that I didn't care about my hangover when I drank all that beer last night.
It's safe to assume that Denver weather forecasters will get it wrong far more than they get it right. And then they will either ignore the fact that they whiffed, or come up with some bullshit excuse, like nascent politicians.

I'm assuming no one wants to discuss why the word "irregardless" really doesn't make sense.

(Yeah...that's really my take away from this. Need more coffee.)

I'm assuming that when a fart is lumpy, the 2 or 5 bowls of chili eaten the night before are to blame.
Gravity varies by altitude.
And the direction in which you're traveling.
