View Full Version : Underwriter not renewing coverage in our state.
We had car insurance through 21st Century, now we have got a notice that our "underwriter" is not renewing coverage in our state. Anybody know about this? Who are you happy with concerning auto coverage in Colorado. We've been perfectly happy with 21stCentury until now. Options???
Are you able to get USAA?
USAA has changed for the worse, in my opinion, with their property claims recently, but I have no idea if they are maintaining their once stellar auto insurance customer service. Colorado is now the 8th worse state for driving and everyone's rates are going up.
After the big AIG scandal a few years ago, it was bought out or rebranded and 21st Century emerged out of that. I realize that none of the info/opinion I just posted actually answers your question. We've got Progressive and have had Geico as well. We've been happy with them, but also haven't had accidents while insured with them. I had an accident when I was insured with The Hartford, but it was so long ago I don't feel like it's relevant (overall good experience).
Steer clear of Fred Loya.
Do you have things other than your vehicles insured through them? If so, I'd cancel all of it and move elsewhere.
I had an insurance company who's name rhymes with "Callstate" once and when I went to renew coverage on my motorcycle they informed me they were no longer insuring motorcycles. So I promptly not only got motorcycle coverage elsewhere but also went elsewhere for my home insurance and my four automobiles too.

Country financial is awesome. They carry my business, home, auto and life insurance.
They probably dont want to do property insurance in Colorado anymore so they have to pull out. That would be my guess.
In regards to coverage, find a good agent or talk to several and see who seems to know what theyre talking about. A good agent will help you avoid pitfalls. You can find someone that had a bad experience with every company out there and someone that praises that same company. Most of the major companies operate similar with a few differences but those differences mostly apply to home insurance. Auto coverage is fairly upfront for 90% of people. But unique situations require more than basic insurance so be sure to communicate with your agent. For example, if you have 30k dumped into your truck, tell them. If you say "i have a 2008 chevy 1500", they assume thats all it is. Outside of that, if you own a home, dont go under 100/300 liability for ANY reason. Ask about glass coverage, rental car coverage and towing. Those arent "standard" with full coverage, contrary to what most people think. Also, read the reviews about the agent before you call. The agent is your advocate so find one that takes care of their clients, not one that just treats you as a number.
If you just say, "I want rental insurance!" to your agent, more often than not you'll get the standard $30/day for up to $900. If you must use a truck for a living, or have to tow for example, $30 a day just isn't going to cover a rental for you.

Correct. Again, talk to your agent. Its ok to converse. The problem is a lot of people hate insurance so they spend the bare minimum time on it. That is a recipe for disaster.

Like HBAR, I have USAA for home, life, and auto. I'm a fan. They replaced my roof last year without blinking, and didn't raise my rates after I negligently backed out of my driveway right into a neighbor's car (ever wonder how a plastic Saturn holds up against a Pinzgauer? - not pretty). Give them a look if you're eligible.
The house I own is with USAA. Even after the 2012 fires, I'm good. Even my neighbor passed. I mitigated both properties.
Now, for rental insurance. Separate carrier but still in the game. I filled during the Coldspring fire and got decent insurance. About the same as USAA.
YMMV but I'm happy.
I don't believe I can get USAA. We only had auto insurance through 21st Century. I'll get in touch with our homeowners insurance company and see what they have to offer. Our auto ins. rates went down every renewal period, I was impressed with that. Never had a claim though.
Thanks for the tips, guys!

If you were ever in the military and honorably discharged you can. You may also be able to get it if you have a parent who was in the military. It's worth giving them a call to find out. I've been with USAA for my car for over 35 years, financed cars, a motorcycle and an RV, and just switched over homeowners to them, too. We've only had one claim in the last 5 years or so but they've always been good to us.
USAA had expanded who they will cover to relatives. I think one person even told me that they have coverage because an uncle was enlisted. It's worth a call to find out.

I have it because my brother is a Marine.
I had to switch companies last fall because Allstate was being unreasonable with my house; my really good agent was powerless against their nonsense so I have nothing good to say about them. Unfortunately, USAA would not insure my mountain house either. State Farm not only insured my house but cut my premium in half. My auto rates are pretty good especially the multi car discount. I am not sure about claims; I've never had an auto claim against my insurance in 31 years of driving so I get every discount offered.

Technically, it only should transfer to immediate family. Last year Geico started gouging me, so I had my grandfather (WW2 USAF vet) sign up for the cheapest possible USAA policy ($30/year). As soon as he was all signed up, my dad signed up for the same. And since it passes down, I was then able to sign up as the descendant of another USAA member and have my cars, renter's, and firearms through USAA. Thanks Grandpa!
I use Safeco for the cars and house, Progressive (Yeah, I know...) for the bikes. My auto rates went up about 5 percent this year, which I can live with. My business liability insurance went up 38% year over year, which massively sucks since the insurer is one of only a very few that will write a policy for a motorcycle shop. 20 years without a business claim.
I haven't had any issues with USAA for home/auto including a recent roof claim. I had a house built in the 1890s that USAA would not insure and had a fun time with 2nd rate Desert Specialty Underwriters. Took 2 months to get a check for the roof.

A top rated company like USAA for those that can't get it is Amica. They put 3 roofs on for me over 10 years and my rates only went up about 15%.

You gotta quit playing horseshoes on the roof, man.
