View Full Version : Carrie Fisher
So, Carrie Fisher was on a flight to LA from London when she suffered a major heart attack. She was rushed to UCLA Medical Center. According to her brother, she is now stable but still in the ICU. Apparently, paramedics performed CPR on her for about 15 minutes before she started breathing again.
But I just saw her in Rogue One and she looked as young as the first time I saw her almost 40 years ago.
Too soon?
In all seriousness, I pray she makes a full recovery. She has been funny and absolutely brutally honest in every interview I've heard her do. She is living proof that money and fame do not produce happiness.
There was a period in her life where she did some things that weren't good to her physically or emotionally. I hope she recovers fully, but having a cardiac emergency in-flight like that...not a good situation. She is being reported as "stable", but how much damage has been done?
How much damage has been done- that's the question. I don't think this is something that she's going to spring back from, although I do hope she is able to recover as fully as possible.

The bad choices she made in her life really took a toll on her. I remember in my youth havng the biggest crush on her after the first Star Wars came out which only magnifies after seeing her in her Return of the Jedi Jabbas palace slave costume.
I don't idolize her anymore, but as an icon from my youth I'd prefer not to lose her so young. I pray she recovers well from this and makes better life choices.
This won't turn out well.

Lucky they were on approach into LAX when she went down. Not sure how much Basic or Advanced Life Support was done before getting to the gate. I hope the pilots ignored the stay in your seat thing as much as possible. International flights generally have Oxygen, AED and ALS pharmaceuticals on board and access to a physician via radio or phone.
But yes, I fear you are correct, I can't see a good outcome from this. Of course stranger things have happened.
As far as the flights, all of them (United-I know) have great medical kits, trained flight attendants who will request medical professionals but can administer help to a degree. Cockpit access to 24/7 doctors who help make calls in what to do to help the passenger, diverting, continuing to destination etc. luckily for her the time this occurred was close to LAX and the crew got there as quick as possible and had medical staff waiting and immediately on the plane when they arrived. They got the best case scenario for her and heopefully she recovers completely.
if you are traveling a lot or on long distance flights I would highly encourage you to get up and take a walk through the cabin, stretch your legs and arms, get some blood flowing and as long as it's okay for you health wise, take a baby aspirin. That advice saved the life of one of my Flight attendants earlier this year on a long haul flight.
From what I've read, she was having a cardiac issue for a while prior to when she stopped breathing before the landing. This didn't seem like a DVT leading to a PE. We should know more about the details later.
There are some exercises you can do while seated as well as walking that can lessen the danger of DVT.
So is "stable" an actual health condition?
Update to my post: I looked it up and it's not. It simply means conditions have not or are not changing. So you can be in critical condition but stable, youch.
GMan, I actually tried crushing the bug in your signature. Twice. I'm pathetic.

So, let me get this straight, it takes until the end of the Star Wars movie to find Luke Skywalker, but the media was able to do it at the drop of a pin?

Carrie, you were always my Princess. Rest in peace that you had so much difficulty finding in this life.
I feel a terrible disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out....
So sad as she was the first celebrity crush of many young men from my generation.

Yes, I loved her even more in the Blues Brothers.
I thought she was great. I loved her in Star Wars.

Yep, 1980. Love the scene with her painting her nails while reading the flame thrower instruction manual.

Bummer. Rest in peace, Carrie Fisher. She wasn't my first celebrity crush but one of many beginning with Shirley Temple, Sky King's neice Penny and Annette Funicello.

Not 100% sure but think Carrie is Debbie Reynolds only child. Either way, always sad to have to bury one of your children. I pray I'll never have to do that myself.
Correction: Also has a son named Todd.

The unsinkable molly brown has sailed her last cruise.
For me one of the more memorable parts she played was that of Lily Prescott, in How the West was Won. Talk about a who's who of actors & actress.

YEAH, WTF IS HAPPENING.
It's called Death, some natural, some not so much.
There's no rhyme or reason to it. When the shadow of death is on ones door step, there's no avoiding answering the door.
She took the loss of her daughter hard...and it appears to have been enough.
RIP Debbie Reynolds.
So many celebrity deaths, so close together.
My heart goes out to Todd, who was with Debbie as they planned Carrie's funeral at the time she had her stroke.
Here is the NPR interview with Terry Gross just last month. Those who are fans will probably enjoy the interview.
