View Full Version : What scope for a 6.5 creedmoor
I just picked up a Browning X-Bolt western hunter in 6.5 Creedmoor. I have read this caliber will do well out to ranges i am not capable of right now. I got it for hunting deer, antelope, elk, etc. Im not to knowledgeable on optics ive always had 3x9s on my hunting rifles. so what would be a good make and option for this rifle. I really like my vortex viper i have on my Aero M5 but the only reason i have that scope was cabelas messed up on the price.
I live the flexibility and price of the bushnell elites. 2.5-16 and as long as you just want a hunting reticule you can get em for less than $600
I have been glad I had 2 or 3 power on the low end more than once. I have been fine with 3x9s or 2x7s on most of my hunting rifles, but the 2x10s and 3x15s are pretty useful when you are out past 500 yards or so, depending on game and caliber. I have shot deer and pronghorn well out past 500 with Vortex 6.5x24 and Burris 4-20.
Would you rather range and dial, or use BDC? That is the biggest question and one that has no right answer. I have done both and at times, the BDC is handier and faster, but dialing is more precise and past 500 yards, will result in a smaller group. Bullet selection is critical, and hitting an elk will be relatively easy, and you will likely be limited by on target energy and performance than inability to hit. Deer, Pronghorn, coyotes, you can stretch out further once you know the game and habits well. Time of flight is a big deal out far.
I prefer Burris Optics as they have more features at a lower price point with a forever warranty, and a CO company to boot. Fullfield E1, Veracity, XRII are all excellent choices depending on budget and what reticle you want.

Any particular price point you want to keep it within? The Bushnell Elite 2.5-16x is a sweet setup. My tastes have drifted to the 3-15x or 3-18x scopes for my hunting rifle. I'm a big fan of the Leupold VX-6 line and have both the 2-12x and 3-18x version. With the 4, 5 and 6x erectors on scopes these days you can get a higher top end without losing your low end/wide field of view.
Would you rather range and dial, or use BDC? That is the biggest question and one that has no right answer.
Probably should have explained this more. With FFP optics, either set up works at any magnification. With SFP optics (more common in hunting lines) they are only accurate at high magnification, which you might not always want.
My brother picked this vortex up from a guy here not long ago and he hasn't put it on anything so I might be getting it from for $400

Honestly it is a good little scope, but I would recommend something with first focal plane (FFP) for you. Might cost you a little but glass is important and 6.5 is a good cartridge. It would be a shame to handicap it with entry level glass.
Take a look at a FFP Vortex PST or better yet a Burris XTR II. The PST can be found in 2-10x or 4-16x and the Burris could be found in 3-15x or 4-20x. I think Jim had one for sale not long ago...
Also lots of people have good things to say about Athlon scopes. They are new but really a good value. I personally have only played with the higher end ones but have a friend I trust who swears by them. PM me if you wish and I can give some info to read about them.
