Trooper 'ambushed,' shot in Tonopah expected to be OK; suspect shot and killed by passer-by

PHOENIX (KPHO/KTVK) -

Two people are dead and a Department of Public Safety trooper who was wounded while responding to a shots fired call along Interstate 10 near Tonopah just might owe his life to an armed passer-by who stopped at exactly the right time.

It started shortly before 4:30 a.m. Thursday with a 911 call from a driver east of California who said somebody shot at his car from the median. According to Col. Frank Milstead, the directors of DPS, that's the call to which the trooper was responding when he came upon a single-vehicle rollover wreck near Tonopah. A woman had been ejected from that vehicle.

The trooper immediately stopped and began laying out flares.

DPS Capt. Damon Cecil said the trooper, a 27-year-veteran of the agency, was ambushed by the suspect when he got out of his vehicle at the scene of the rollover. That's when the trooper was shot and wounded.

"A physical fight between our trooper and that suspect then ensued, at which time the suspect was shot and killed," Cecil said. "Right now that's all we have. This is a fluid investigation."

Milstead, speaking from the hospital to which his trooper and taken, said an "uninvolved third party" who was driving by saw the trooper grappling with the suspect and stopped to help, eventually shooting and killing the suspect.

That civilian, using the wounded trooper's radio, was the one who alerted DPS to the shooting.

HA! I beat KevDen2005 with this one :D

Great news.

Now we wait to see if the hero gets charged.

I doubt he will charged. Unless he is a prohibited person. Then he will lose his gun. LOL

This is rural Maricopa County, AZ (Sheriff Joe country) ... chances are he'll get a medal before he gets charged.

Sheriff Joe is no longer. There's a Do Gooder Sheriff in town now...

"Penzone pledged to reverse several of Arpaio's "unorthodox and divisive" practices (see Maricopa County Sheriff's Office controversies), which Penzone considers to be publicity stunts, such as forcing jail inmates to wear pink underwear and "investigating" President Obama's birth certificate.[9] Penzone also said that he would scale back the use of inmate chain gangs and review "Tent City" (an area of the jail housing inmates in military-style tents).[9]"

You shouldn't have to beat anyone. Unfortunately with it being open season on LE across the country, it like other things have become a way of life. Not the exception.

Not the exception.

In the spirit of the word association thread, exception ~ "accept"ion.

A sad commentary.

But the nanny Bloomberg crowd claims civilians "never" stop crime with guns. Obv fake news.

Nice one. I always love a happy ending, especially when citizens use their rights to assist and help police officers. It gives me a warm and fuzzy.

In Arizona? The dude might be the next Sheriff somewhere down there.

Wow, that's an amazing story. Thankfully the samaritan came along and had the composure to get on the radio and call it in. Hope the trooper recovers quickly. As a former Arizonan I dealt with the DPS on multiple occasions, real good guys back then and hope that's continued.

Now that we are out of Colorado and in Arizona I am so appreciative of the gun laws they have here. Every state in the union should have constitutional carry rights. All the other silly laws such as mag limits and restrictions on private party transactions don't exist here. There are a few things that you have to be aware of in regards to where you carry down here but in general it is fair game. I hope that the laws of CA and CO never creep in.

This. Side note, he DOES need a medal.

Here's the guy that helped the Trooper in Arizona by shooting the badguy.

Thomas Yoxall

Aside from his more "alternative" appearance he's also a former felon that got his life straightened out and his rights restored.
Definitely busting some stereotypes here.

I always like feel good stories like this and I believe that non violent felons should definitely get their rights restored.

I watched the video of his press conference and it is obvious that the shooting has affected him a lot. I hope he gets help if needed and it doesn't cause a negative impact on is life.

That is more than I had seen before. His answer that he doesn't consider himself a hero is exactly why he is a hero.

This clip has even more and you can hear the questions asked.
