Previously there was some question about inmate treatment:

and more recently:

Who wants to give odds on Ratzlaff "disappearing"?

I'm curious what other LEOs on here think of evidence winding up in a public storage locker and going to auction...

Interesting for sure, I read over the article twice, and it doesn't seem Ratzlaff was real smart about the way he handled it, almost nonchalant, waited until he "ran into" a deputy to say anything. Working in the business for nearly 12 years now, I've crossed paths with Freemont deputies before, and while I'm sure there are some good ones, the majority leave a lot to be desired. Currently work with a guy that used to be a Freemont deputy, he said it's the worst job he's ever had, and he couldn't get out of there quick enough.

All I can say is that Fremont County can be a real dangerous place. The inmate psyche pervades the entire community.

Is it time to drain the swamp?

MFCGA?

I can't imagine the folks who live there and pay taxes are happy.

I moved from CA to Canon City after my Military Contract was completed. It was an interesting place for sure. I had an acquaintance that sold Meth to high Gov officials in that fine city. I lasted 2 months there. After being pulled over with California plates a few times....I couldn't register my car fast enough in CO.

If you get pulled over in Fremont County, it might be a good idea to have voice recording or video going. Just saying.

It's not cognitive dissonance so much as it is them being retired and not having much interaction with the police. Were I living there, I'd likely make as many law enforcement friends as possible; just as a survival tactic.

Another agency involved now. I figure the brother or a close "friend" did it.

Another forum has a close relative mentioning the crime.

This case may be one for the feds to work on.

The murder took place in the area of Cotopaxi. From what I have read on the web, she was shot multiple times with a shotgun and 22LR. Area is notorious for drug labs. Copper Gulch it is called.

From what I know, as long as you don't piss off the wrong people (ones on the special list), then you'll be ok... last time I was pulled over at all it was Canon PD for a "dim taillight"... gave him my CCW with my license and cooperated- just got a warning... it was a bogus reason to pull me over in the first place.

If you cross the wrong person, I'm not sure having "friends" in the department would help much... unless you're on the special list.

It would not surprise me in the slightest that someone on the protected list was involved with the homicide in 2006, so the evidence was "lost" and the investigation derailed deliberately...
I have no evidence, but it would fit with other incidents (like homicides being ruled suicides as you mentioned... )

We lived here for quite a while commuting to COS, not even going to Canon and were blissfully unaware. Since then we have had friends (yes, plural- different unrelated incidents) that have crossed the wrong people before...

I don't think the percentage of "mall cops" are quite has high as some put it, since I know some decent people around- but the really bad apples make up for the few that are trying to be decent.... and the corruption is far beyond just the LE departments.

Aren't there a lot of inmate's families that move to the CC area to be near their loved ones? That's got to affect the mentality of the cops there, too.

I interviewed for a job with a law firm in CC in 2005. I guess I'm lucky I didn't get it, sounds like crazy stuff going on down there...
