Try the Persona Lab Blues.

They work really well in my Merkur 34HD.

Find a sample pack and try out a few different brands.

That's a good idea they really are not that expensive to begin with

ebay has a bunch of samples packs too. I'd also check out Dorco http://www.dorcousa.com/pace-double-edge-blades-5-pack-std301/ They also have great deals on multi blade razors. Get on their email list and they will send you offers that are awesome. Dorco is the company that make the Dollar shave club razors. If someone is considering safety razor shaving, spend a bit more and buy an adjustable model. Mekur is my favorite for modern, Gillette if you have time to find a vintage one.

Last blades I bought were Astra Superior Platinum, made in Turkey. Blades are a personal preference and buying samples to try different brands is an excellent suggestion. Safety razors are proof that "new" is not always "improved." A single blade is every bit as good at shaving than three, four, or five blade cartridges, and for far less money.

My daily blade is a Personna Red. But as with many things, YMMV. WestCoastShaving.com has a good selection and I think some samples.

Some think Feathers are the bee's knees. I didn't. Sharks aren't bad. There are a lot out there if ya look.

Is your DE adjustable? That will play into the closeness/aggressiveness of the shave.

If you are interested:
I have a long handle, open comb, Merkur 34 I'm looking to sell.

I think I spend about $13 every 18 months to shave. Then again, I don't like shaving and avoid it a much as I can.

I pretty much never fully shave. I shave my neck but that's it. I did shave fully last Monday but before that it had been 2 years

I shave about 1 time every 3-6 months, after I shave off my beard -- mainly just to let my face breath.

"“The beard signifies the courageous; the beard distinguishes the grown men, the earnest, the active, the vigorous. So that when we describe such, we say, he is a bearded man.” - St. Augustine, Exposition on Psalm 133, 6 - See more at: http://aleteia.org/2013/10/30/5-church-fathers-on-that-most-manly-of-traits-the-beard/#sthash.pPh6lgrX.dpuf"

I must be doing something wrong. Maybe it is the safety razor or blades I purchased. I would have to be very careful with my face, and if I decided to shave my head, it looked like I tried out for Edward Sissorhands roll at the local theater and lost.

I went back to the old 3 blade expensive ones and haven cut myself since.

Ideas?

I'm with you on that. I have a little half-assed beard/stache that I keep trimmed. I use the trimmer to hit the whiskers on the rest of my face. I also use it to touch up the hair around the ears/sideburns. It's like an all-in-one tool. Last few years I've been trimming ear and nose hair more than anything. Guess that comes with reaching "old man" status.

Never used a safety razor. Maybe I'll try that and see if I still hate shaving as much as I do now.

It takes practice. I stopped shaving my head wit safety razors, it just took too long and I have a couple of moles that would always get nicked. I now shave my head with an electric razor, takes 5 minutes vs 40. I still use a safety razor with Persona Blues on the face though.

Everytime I read one of these threads I always get excited about buying a safety razor to see if I can get a good clean shave that won't turn into a red, irritated mess two days later. Then I come to the conclusion that there is some element of a hobby with this topic. So I have to ask you guys that are into this stuff, do you feel like it is a hobby for you, like reloading or restoring axe handles or something?

The key to shaving the head with a blade is to let the blade do the work, not applied pressure -- I learned this the hard way.

Before I went the beard route, I used a safety razor. Worked like a charm. As stated, you let the blade do the work. The multi-bladed wonders seem to clog up and become inefficient.

With the beard, it's been an electric Braun shaver for years keeping the neck cleaned up.

Speaking of antiques, my dad has the shaving kit provided to his father in WW I. All packaged in a compact olive drab cloth wrapped case; Gilette safety razor, blades, and a stainless steel mirror. Cool stuff.

For me, a safety razor is cheaper and gives me a better shave on my face. I have much less irritation with a safety razor than I do with the regular cartridge razors.

I don't consider shaving as a hobby. It is just a hygiene issue like showering or haircuts. I gave up on the multi-blade cartridges when I realized what a bulk pack was costing me.

Whatever works for you is probably the best course of action. It is nice to try something new once in a while but I often find myself going back to simple and cost effective. YMMV

Be safe.

That is why I gave up on straight razor shaving. It required more time and money than it should. I like safety razors because a nice razor might be 70 bucks, but then blades are almost free. They are turning into a bit of a niche item, they are not sold everywhere.

Safety vs Mach 3:

https://www.reddit.com/r/wicked_edge/comments/22d8ig/stubble_under_microscope_by_mach_3_vs_de_safety/

Some info:
http://www.toolsofmen.com/shaving-with-a-safety-razor/

Top is largely anecdotal and the labeling of his pics suck.

However, the bottom link gives a lot of good info on the science behind the safety razor vs a cartridge one.

Best I can tell, a safety razor is a trust .22LR of the shaving world and cartridge razors are a high cost gimmick that scalp (ha!) people ignorant of the more traditional ways (without going all arterial slicing straight razor).

I'll stick with my beard, but I might pick up a safety for when I need to look 15.

I have been shaving 4-7 times a week for about 35yrs. Not sure I'd call it a hobby. My reloading and axe collection is much larger than my shaving collection. [Coffee]

Got out of "wet shaving" in my 20s and started using electric razors. Still do (Brauns). Use a DE 1-2 times a week for clean-up.

I've found that prep, good soap and a sharp blade are the best way to avoid skin irritation. I use a pre-oil and that helps too.

Heard some good things about Lord razors. Most of what I have came from antique/junk shops and eBay. Take a look at CO Shavers on S. Broadway.

That's the key to any good shave. I usually follow up after some warm water with witch hazel, to tighten the pores.

I went to a safety razor for about 6 months and love the quality of the shave but got tired of it when I started shaving my head full time. I now use https://www.amazon.com/Dorco-Plus-Blade-System-Trimmer/dp/B008O82O7C with https://www.amazon.com/Cremo-Original-Astonishingly-Superior-Shaving/dp/B009WQH8SA.

I love a safety razor but shaving my head 3 or 4 times a week plus my face killed any sort of desire I had to go through a drawn out shaving process.

At some point, I may try a safety razor just for the heck of it. I have been using Mach III disposables that I pick up at Sam's or Costco for a few years . . . I grab a pack whenever they go on sale. Have a mirror in the shower and I just shave real quick first thing. And ever since I put in a water softener, it seems like I get a good 2 weeks or more out of one razor. So I'm paying more than I could with a safety razor, but it's not a huge expense and so far it works for me.

I tried a safety razor for a bit as well and couldn't get it down. Had to go over my face a few times to get the same shave I get with my Gillette and then my skin was usually on fire/irritated afterwards..

I'm still thinking of trying a sample pack of blades with the safety razor again to see if my face just didn't like the blades that came with the razor.
